However, this growth has slowed since 2007 as investments by local businesses have shifted away from automated manufacturing towards services such as health care and real estate ventures. Downtown Kalamazoo also suffers from vacancy rates above 50%. This indicates that although automation may be reducing jobs within certain sectors overall,[3] they are not disappearing completely but Rather they are being replaced by more modern forms which offer better wages and benefits than older ones did before them; this could lead to increased demand for service jobs within cities like Detroit if these trends continue

Portage is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan, about 20 miles north of the Detroit metropolitan area. The population was 7,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Iron Mountain Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Portage were French fur traders in 1695 and 1696 who named it "Bois de la Prairie" after a short distance away, La Prairie on the Ottawa River. In 1701, George Washington's forces landed at Grand Traverse Bay on their way upriver to capture Detroit and establish British control over Upper Canada. Captain John St Clair built Fort Dearborn in 1702 as anoubt protect against American attacks from the south while he built otherforts along the riverine route to supply Detroit with provisions and munitions. In 1812, General James Kempton ordered Colonel John McLaughlin to reoccupy Fort Dearborn and garrison it with Regular troops while supplies were being transported downriver by steamboat from Michilimackinac Bridge over the Rouge River (now called I-75). A rifle duel took place between Kempton and McLaughlin inside Fort Dearborn on July 5, 1812; Kempton won but died of his injuries two days later in a military hospital at Algonquin Park near Toronto in Ontario County, New York. The fortifications around Dearborn served as a model for many subsequent U.S.-built forts throughout much of North America during both World War II (1939-1945) and the Cold War (1947-1990). In 1950, Portage was incorporated as a township under Wayne County government jurisdiction; however, it remained administratively separate until 1978 when its name was changed to Portage Township
