Portage, Michigan is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 5,858 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kalamazoo-Portage Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Portage were French fur traders and explorers who came across the Mackinac Straits in 1699. They named their new settlement after George Washington's estate on the St Clair River, near Detroit, which they had seen from their ship "Natchez". The first post office was established in 1701, and by 1734, it had become a village with a store and two churches. In 1827, part of Portage Township (together with neighboring Wayne County) became an independent county under the name of Grand Rapids County; however, this county continued to be divided into townships until it was abolished in 1907 when all counties were reorganized under the new system of regional government. In 1910, parts of Muskegon Heights andsectional portions of Van Buren Township also became unincorporated communities within Clinton Township; these township changes remained effective until 1973 when they were repealed by local law as part of wider restructuring that took effect in that year statewide. In 1975–1976 President Gerald Ford signed legislation creating Portage Community College District No. 1 out of portions of Clinton Township which had been unincorporated since 1917; this district served as its own governing body for college students and staff until 1986 when it merged with other community colleges districts statewide to form the present day Michigan Community Colleges System (MCCS). On July 1, 1996 Unifor Local 827 announced plans to start a bargaining campaign for representation on behalf of employees at MCCS campuses outside those located within Clinton Township; this campaign ended without any success after about one year due to lack of unity among employees at various campuses throughout MCCS. In 1836, the first post office was established in what is now Portage. The townspeople named their community after George Washington's trading post on the Ottawa River, which was then part of Canada. By 1870, when the United States acquired land east of Detroit, many residents chose to move to what would become Portage because of its rich agricultural potential. The railroad arrived in 1892 and quickly made Portage one of its most important localities. Today, it remains a thriving community with a population over 1,000 people and a diverse mix of businesses and families.

By 1830, there were 10 houses in town and 100 people living hereabouts. In 1834, Hagerty helped found the first religious congregation in what would become Portage – the United Presbyterian Church of America (UPCA). In 1840, two brothers named Milton and John Hervey bought land near present day North Avenue and Western Boulevard for a cotton mill they were building called "Hervey's Mill". The managers of the mill decided to move it to Racine because that was closer to markets for their commodities but they left behind over 60% of their equipment including looms and spinning wheels which still stands today inside Portage Museum! This example shows how important industry could be during times when transportation wasn't always reliable or easy to come by so large families had to establish themselves quickly if they wanted a piece of this American dream . . . even if it meant moving away from home!
