Portage is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and the seat of Portage County. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–East Lansing metropolitan area. The first European settlers arrived in what is now Portage in 1795 as part of a trading expedition led by George Washington and his aide-de-camp, James Knoppers. The town was founded on the site of present-day downtown by Peter Skene in 1807 as an agricultural village named after General George Armstrong Custer's unit, which was then based in Fort Recovery on Lake Superior. In 1824, when Ottawa River militia forces under Genesee County sheriff David Beatty encountered Native Americans near what is now downtown, they killed all but one man and five women and children before burning down Skene's home; that village became known as "Fort Wayne". In 1827, Detroit trader Isaac Carr donated land to be developed into a town for workers he had recruited from among his Indian trading partners during his travels through Michigan Territory; this area became known as "Portage." Carr's donation included a millrace which still flows through downtown Portage today. After being platted out as a town by commissioners John Smedley (1830), Amos Eaton (1832), and Nathan Dowling (1833), it reached its current size with only 8 residents in 1840 when it incorporated under Act No., 24 Geo., 4 P&S.: "An act to establish certain villages within this county." The first mayor was Tryon Dutton (1841–43). Dutton pushed to build a large steamboat harbor on the east side of present-day Harbor Springs so that larger vessels could be unloaded there rather than having them towed aroundriver; this effort failed because commercial shipping grew faster along the &&& stream system instead. However, Dutton did found what would become one ofMichigan's most important civic organizations: the Democratic Club which opened its doors for membership on December 6th, 1847 at 11 Woodward Ave...the club has since been renamed both The City Club & Community Center Incorporated.... [he also] served two terms consecutively as Mayor from 1863 until 1870... [his successor], Salmon Pekar successfully lobbied Congress to appropriate $1 million towards building an electric street railway system throughout central Michigan while Mayor Pekar also helped secure passage of legislation establishing State Normal School at nearby Stroudsburg On September 15th 1850 USN Lt.-Commander Charles Wistar died suddenly while ashore at Grand Traverse Bay aboard USS Constitution during operations againstubiquitously built Redoubt Point battery off Mackinac Island;[Wistar] was posthumously awarded United States military honors including rank insignia and burial with full honors at Arlington National Cemetery Navy Vice Admiral Charles Eliot Wistar Posthumous Medal Citation: “For distinguished services rendered while serving upon board USS Constitution during operations against ubiquitously built Redoubt Point battery off Mackinac Island” This event helped pave way for later military veterans like World War II veteran Harry Truman who received honorary military rank insignia from President Franklin D Roosevelt

Portage, Michigan is a small town in the Kalamazoo Valley of Portage County, Michigan. The population was 1,890 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids-Wyoming Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was named for John E. Portage, an early settler and founder of what is now Portage Township. The first mention of Portage in history occurred in 1824 when Nicholas Haines and his party came through the area on their way from Green Bay to Detroit. He noted that he had seen a "large body" of people living near what is now known as Maple Road in what is now East Lansing Township (now Midland). In 1827, Isaac Lemoine built a sawmill on the east bank of the Ottawa River in what is now Waterford Township (now Hillsboro), not far from where Portage would later be founded. By 1830, Joseph Bemis had erected a gristmill on West Main Street just north of present day Bridgeport Avenue in what is today downtown East Lansing. In 1831, George Meek sold land along the Ottawa River to Henry Flagler for $1 million dollars ($ as of 2018). flagler acquired additional land ceding it back and forth between him and others until he had most all of it purchaser by 1893 when he donated it to Flint Hospital Foundation which then used it as its headquarters until moved to Independence Heights near Flint in 1957.
