In 1840, Jno Aiken founded another small farmstead southwest of present day Mount Pleasant and called it Prairie du Chien; this name also persists as an agricultural landmark about 2 miles south of town on M-113 east of I-94 exit 33 (the old alignment of US 131). James Ewing platted what would become Portage Township in 1839 which included present day Dentonville, Prairie du Chien, Mount Pleasant, and other tracts north and northeast thereof including parts now within Muskegon Heights et al., all except for current townshipswest side onlyof the river between them forming today's borders with those townships. He named his township after George Washington but no evidence exists that Washington ever visited or resided in this area although he may have been associated with its development through his connection with Fort Dearborn/Washington County northwest along the river during that time period. George Stephenson purchased land here from Ewing for $1,000 on July 16th, 1850 following his arrival as captain general upon completion of Detroit's founding as a result of American Civil War – thus becoming one Of Many Firsts For Michigan! Dentonville Post Office opened November 14th 1850 under the name "Dearborn". It closed December 10th 1863 due to lackadaisical postal service outlooks combined w/funding shortfalls caused by Union armyraidings throughout newly acquired Upper Peninsula locales during winter 1862-'63 season & subsequent resulting economic downturn; reopening January 3rd 1865 resulted from appropriation act congress passed February 28th 1865 naming same post office after Daniel Webster who served concurrently as Secretary Of State during latter portion Of That Year's Lincoln Administration! Ewingtown Light House opened October 12th 1870 atop an existing grist mill located just southeast corner lot @ Mtpleasant Rd & Saginaw Rd just west side street fronting Main St NW original village limits now within present boundaries chartered by state March 4th 1919! It serves today as a roadside attraction unique among U.S.--built using stone quarried nearby & hauled overland directly to site--remnants visible atop modern white aluminum cladding soon reaching top elevation approx 9' tall
On the east side of Portage, in what is now the city of Grand Rapids, there was a steel works that operated from 1885 to 1951. The plant produced rails and other metals for railroads and other companies. The company also manufactured locomotives, cars, and trucks.
