Portage, Michigan is a small town in Grand Traverse County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kalamazoo-Wixom Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was platted in 1868 by John W. VanderMeer as part of a larger area west of Battle Creek called "Niles Township", which became part of Grand Traverse County on December 11, 1868. On November 15, 1870, Portage had a total population of 308 residents and was unincorporated. According to the USGS Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), the name is derived from an Ottawa word meaning stream or runnel and indicating its location near an intermittent stream known as "Portage Run". A post office called Portage was established in 1872, and remained in operation until it closed in 1911. In 1902, a group of investors organized the village of Portage Falls to be located east of present day Portage between Battle Creek and Big Rapids Reservoirs on land that had been donated by Simon Gillemarson. The original village consisted of just a few houses and several stores. In 1906, when battle creek became too polluted for farming purposes to allow further growth southward following large industrialization there were efforts made to move the village out into what is now north central Grand Traverse County but it failed due to lack of support from local citizens; however with more recent development nearby this problem may no longer exist as much land has been developed around the current site making it difficult for any new activity to take place there without prior planning consent from both sides involved

The first successful trials were conducted in 1853 with the 8×50mm British Rifleman model but soon thereafter other nations began developing their own firearms with this new type of ammunition. It wasn’t until 1903 when American Colonel Edward Mott developed his first bolt-action rifle that rifles became practical with this type of ammunition. The introduction of smokeless powder beginning in 1886 ultimately led to greater accuracy and consistency for firearm rounds than ever before possible. Today we continue using ammo designed specifically for firearms with high performance standards such as FMJ bullets that travel distances up to 600 meters without detonating prematurely inside the cartridge case
In 1868, the U.S. Patent No. 5,853,927 was issued to George Armstrong Custer for an improved rifle cartridge design named "Custer's Rifle". The new cartridge had a larger case with a higher velocity than any other military cartridge at the time. The first cartridges fired in rifles using this new ammunition were called "Armstrong's New Rifle Ammunition" and were introduced in 1876 into the Union Army as part of the USATF program to improve infantry tactics during the American Civil War.

In the 1840s, Portage became embroiled in a land dispute with neighboring Racine over control of a parcel of land that formed the nucleus of what is now Racine. The confrontation led to violence and ultimately resulted in Richardson's death. The town declined until its revival during World War II as an important military supply base.
