Portage, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 7,814 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clinton County and home to the University of Portage, which has campuses in Grand Rapids and Muskegon Heights. The city was founded on May 4, 1824 by pioneers led by Elisha Graves and David Dixon as a small trading post on the Miami River between what are now Muskegon Heights and Grand Rapids. The first permanent settler in Portage Township was James Kapp who arrived in 1827. In 1830, Daniel Wells established a fur trading post at nearby Green Bay; this connection led to increased trade between Detroit and Appleton (now Waukesha). When Ohio became part of the United States in 1792, it ceded land near present-day Flint to Michigan as part of peace treaty negotiated during the Indian Wars. This gave rise to speculation that a large natural harbor could be dug near Mackinac Island for ships carrying goods from Detroit to Superior and points south along Lake Superior before being shipped through Holland Harbor on Mackinac Island for shipment downriver to Chicago or other markets in North America. In 1821 Augustus Dearborn organized what would become known as Dearborn & Company merchants shipping vessels upriver from Detroit using Lakes; this company built wharves at Butternut Harbor on Mackinac Island beginning in 1826 and built an additional wharf at Gratiot Harbor on Grosse Ile island beginning in 1830 In 1824 Elisha Graves founded Portage City with sites lying east of where today's Muskegon Heights stands and west of Gratiot Harbor The first permanent settler was James Kapp who arrived early 1830 During its first decade as a town, Portage experienced some growth but also some decline due primarily to continued conflict with Native Americans over land ownership rights internal strife within Dearborn & Company caused significant financial problems which eventually led to its bankruptcy filed in 1840 In 1850 Congress passed a law creating "the territorial government" for all Upper Great Lakes regions under American jurisdiction following Debtor's Rebellion against English rule throughout North America Although never put into effect due mainly to lack of support from President Fillmore, this act did create precedent for future western settlements such as Milwaukee (opened January 31st year following)

The first humans to live in what is now Portage began arriving around 1000 BC when Paleo-Indians crossed from Siberia over the frozen tundra to find land that would support crops and villages developed there about 500 AD by traders from Russia who traded with Native Americans on the Great Lakes region. The Portage Road was built by fur traders in order to access the land they were seeking. In 1809, two American soldiers, James K. Polk and Winfield Scott, traveled down the road as part of their invasion of Mexico. They named their route after General Wayne's victory at Battle of Fallen Timbers (1808).
