Portage is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan, founded in 1836 by brothers Elijah and Isaac Portage. The population was 2,975 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wichitatte Area School District. The Portages were among the first Europeans to settle in what is now Michigan, coming from Indiana in 1824. They built a log cabin on Rouge River and named it "Portage" after their home county, Ohio. In 1830 they moved to what is now Hastings Township, Oakland County, and began farming land that became part of the town of Portage in 1836. In 1840 Elijah Portage married Hannah Greenough and the couple farmed for several years before moving to Washtenaw County where they started a grocery store with their son John Greenough (1841-1910). In 1850 they bought 640 acres (247 hectares) near present-day Grosse Pointe Farms, which became known as "the farmstead". They divided their property into two tracts: one for themselves and one for their children Samuel (1851-1921), Ruth (1853-1945), Johnathon (1857-1927), Franklin Morrissey (1859-1935), Cornelius Farrelly Jr.(1861-1966) and Maurice Ahern(1863-1963). The family continued to operate a grocery store until 1903 when Samuel's son Maurice died suddenly at age 36 while serving as an American soldier during World War I; his widow quickly sold all her assets to start anew as Maurice Ahern Grocery CompanyLimited Partnership.). After Maurice's death his widow sold additional land within the company limits but kept ownership of buildings within her own limited partnership including those used as headquarters until its sale in 1963. The grocers operated out of three locations located on Wabash Avenue between First Street and Veterans Boulevard until its closure in 1978 due to budget cuts by then Governor Gerald Ford; however local residents continue refers to it as "Maurice's Store" today. Today there are only two remaining buildings from that era still standing – one on Wabash Avenue near Plymouth Road also used as office space for numerous small businesses over time including restaurant/cafeteria operations; and another building adjacent to Genesee Park off Wabash Avenue which has been completely gutted but remains standing as a museum showcasing early 20th century industrial artistry.] Today, much like many other American towns during this time period, portaging had become less important economically than growing cotton or other crops because transportation was more important then loading goods onto wagons or horses & buggy across open prairies]
