It is one of three cities in MI with over 10,000 residents (the others being Detroit and Flint). The first Europeans tosight what is now Port Huron were traders on the Upper Peninsula who charted their course upstream while exploring for new land to settle in 1795 when they discovered an opening through which the St. Clair River flowed into Lake Superior. They named it after Jean-Baptiste de La Salle's exploratory ship "René" that had reached this point in 1792 before sailing back upriver again and finding no land suitable for settlement. In 1812, General John McLaren established Fort Mackinac on Houghton Point at the mouth of Muskegon Bay so that United States forces could blockade Great Britain during its war with France. In 1814, he built Fort Dearborn on Saginaw Bay so that US forces could blockade Napoleon's army advancing from Mexico into Canada during his invasion of that country. In 1825, George Stephenson developed a locomotive called "The Rocket" which became widely used throughout North America on railways beginning with Canadian Pacific Railway's Kingston-Orillia line in 1827; this made Port Huron one of the most important rail hubs in North America at that time. In 1862, Henry Ford opened his first car dealership here and began production at his next location downriver - Highland Park - soon followed by other automobile companies throughout Michigan and Eastern Canada until World War II when production stopped due to bombings by Japan; although some plants continued until 1973 due to Henry Ford's legacy continuing unchanged throughout those years! A significant event occurred within town limits on October 13th 1910 when Edward Everett Healy became Mayor after successfully running against incumbent Jock Colquitt two years earlier; Healy would later be elected Governor (1974-1980)serving twice! Portsmouth Township was formed effective date November 12th 1905 from portions east/northeastof downtown Port Huron including parts lying south/southeastof Main Street eastward to First Avenue northward forming what is now known as Portsmouth Township! On December 1st 1915 Alfred Pohl purchased 4 acres northwestof Main Street cornering Wabash Avenue from Harry Baughman for $8 per acre making him proprietor & owner-operator thereof!. A post office called "Port Huron" was established there March 2nd 1916 under Act No 9219 from Chas Laughlin . August 15th 1922 saw blaze occur near old power plant consumed all materials used therein & destroyed lot valued at $3200 Itself! That same year saw incorporation by charter as Village Of Port Huron Incorporation Number 128784 granted by State Board Of Trustees dated September 20th 1923!! On October 7th 1925 village trustees adopted resolution providing for electric light service & certain types water main connections thru outVillage becoming effective November 5th 1926 !! Village Limits expansion plans included construction ol a hospital (now Community Health Center), new library & garage adjacent thereto also funded throughvl ligation extending upto 5 blocks northerly along First avenue NW w/ access via alley leading thereto from Second Ave., vestiges ol old Masonic Temple still standing today located just southeast o fMain Street
