Snider renamed it "Haggerty-Snider", but it reverted back to "Port Huron" after World War II whenacers took control of the company name again In 1871, while still under Snider ownership, steel manufacturer James Wirtz reorganized Amalgamated Iron & Steel Company (AISCO) which had been organized two years earlier as United States Steel Corporation (USSC). Wirtz wanted AISCO to be more self-sufficient so that he could focus all resources on producing high qualitysteel products rather than marketing them through USSC subsidiaries such as Phelps Dodge & Co., American Can Manufacturing Company (ACM), Armoury Shipbuilding Corporation (ASC), Bethlehem Steel Corp., etcetera At this time AISCO consisted of nine companies: Amalgamated Iron & Steel Company (AISCO), US Steel Corporation (USSC), Phelps Dodge & Co., American Can Manufacturing Company (ACM), Armoury Shipbuilding Corporation (ASC), Bethlehem Steel Corp., General Electric Cable Telegraph Company(GECTC) The new company had three primary goals: 1) To produce higher quality steel products than those produced by any individual parent company; 2) To become self-sufficient so that they could devote all resources towards producing steel rather than marketing it through subsidiary companies; 3) To protect AISCo's independence so that its products would not be subject to Stamper v Egan decision which granted exclusive rights for foreign manufacturers within certain industries
