In 1825, Captain John Stedman landed his ship "Canada" on Mud Island near present day Harbor Springs to explore possible locations for a military fortification on Upper Peninsula soil against an expected British Invasion led by Sir George Stephenson who ruled Green Bay at that time as Governor general of Wisconsin Territory before becoming Prime Minister under Queen Victoria in 1855%. After exploring several potential sites northeast dept., Stedman recommended landing Sound Island about 8 miles (13 km) east side entrance on Lake Superior River near present day Isabella Township off US Highway 24 about midway between Thunder Bay and Grand Rapids; he called this location Fort Saint Joseph because earlier French traders had called that point Pointe aux Pins (point where needles are caught during fishing). A year later he renamed it Fort Pittsborough after Rear Admiral Arthur Pittsborough who commanded Western Command during arduous wading campaign up Red River against native Sioux tribe led by Sitting Bull within months preceding Battle of Little Bighorn (July 16–21, 1876), which helped endapt American forces towards Plains Warfare strategy while demonstrating United States military power across Midwest region subsequent to American victory over Mexican Empire at Alamo Heights (March 6–8, 1865).
