Gun slings, also known as gun sling shots or simply “gunslingers” were a common form of target shooting at the time in Port Huron, Michigan. Gun slings originated from the days of muzzleloading firearms when shooters would shoot rounds off longbows with hand-held projectiles such as arrows. The traditional way to fire these projectiles was by holding the bow close to one's body and pulling the string back and forth, causing the round to fly through the air and hit a target very close by. In order to take advantage of this method of firing, shooters laid out their targets on open ground some distance from their homes or businesses. When night fell, they would gather around their targets before dark, taking aim and launching their rounds into the sky. The beauty of this type of shooting was that it allowed for a high degree of accuracy since there was no need for perfect aim. As long as you knew where your target was, you could fire off any number of rounds without having any trouble hitting it. This type of shooting became very popular among port Huron locals during the 1800s due to its simplicity and its ability to produce high scores on local competition stages. Unfortunately, whilegun slings remained an important part of local Target Practice history, they also became quite dangerous when used ungodly amounts in competition settings. In 1892, an incident occurred which led to what is still considered one of the deadliest shootings ever conducted with firearms in Michigan involving gun slings. A groupof men dressed in costumes representing different aspects of Americana were set up outside a theater in downtown Detroit waiting for unsuspecting moviegoers who had just left for screenings after midnight. Once people started arriving within minutes (and presumably seeing all those costumes), somebody decided to take matters into their own hands and hold up two shotguns pointing directly at unsuspecting theater goers inside! Unfortunately for both parties involved (the gunmen who opened fire upon innocent theater goers and those behind them trying to save them), there were too many people present for either side to get off shot without fatalities - unfortunately another tragedy committed with handguns years later!
