When soldiers burned down part of downtown in 1871 during an occupation order, local businessmen rebuilt it using lumber taken from other destroyed buildings in downtown Detroit and replaced most of the original architecture with modern styles. Theodore Roosevelt called Port Huron "the best place I've ever been" while he was mayor from 1921 to 1925. He enjoyed fishing there and played soccer on one occasion against Ford Motor Company executives who were visiting port to inspect new production facilities at nearby Highland Park Motorsports Park

Port Huron is a city on the Michigan shoreline and the county seat of Lapeer County, Michigan. The population was 153,651 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Michigan. Vanderbilt and others near present-day Highland Park Boulevard and Ionia Avenue to exploit natural resources such as oil shale and gas reserves in what is now Kalamazoo County. Rockefeller later moved his company to Clairton, Pennsylvania where it became ExxonMobil. In 1894, Henry Ford began production of his Model T on Dearborn Heights Road south of downtown Port Huron opposite Mackinac Island National Park just off the Straits of Mackinac Bridge. Ford's only customer was himself; other automakers did not establish operations within the city limits until well into World War II. The concentration of industry eventually created air pollution problems that have been exacerbated by suburban development around downtown Port Huron since the early 21st century. The major economic sectors during this time were transportation (the port), shipbuilding (the manufacture of ships), diversified agriculture (livestock) and chemical manufacturing (petroleum products). Manufacturing plants located along Ionia Avenue outside downtown Port Huron produced trucks, buses, tractors and other machinery until they closed during the 1970s due to competition from foreign manufacturers who could build more cheaply in developing countries while avoiding health hazards associated with traditional industrial processes like asbestos usage or heavy use of lead acid batteries
Port Huron, Michigan was first settled in 1807 by John S. Goode and others. It became a town in 1829, when it was included in the Huron County seat of Port Huron. The town was renamed Detroit on July 1, 1837, after its founder, James K. DeKalb. It became an independent city on April 25, 1888.
