The city then experienced rapid growth due to burgeoning auto industry development in nearby Flint and other nearby towns during this period; however, around World War I regional competition for jobs led to decreased economic activity in Pontiac and rapid decline in population until new heavy industry arrived during World War II which revitalized the city's economy along with numerous new homes being built throughout downtown Pontiac Today's downtown area still retains much of its early-20th century character with plenty of historic architecture including Watervliet Arsenal School building completed in 1903 as well as several smaller buildings associated with various industries such as Ford Motor Company's Dearborn plant complex built between 1927-1930 Pontiac has been home to several professional sports teams including the Detroit Tigers (1945-present), United States Hockey League's Flint Generals (1951-1957), National Lacrosse League's Toledo Walleye (1998-2001), East Lansing Eagles (2009-) while also hosting numerous high school football championships both boys & girls since 1893 including multiple titles won by Detriot Tigers High School
