By 1862, however, Pontiac had reached its peak population size with over 945 residents. However, within a few years, population decline began to occur due to various factors such as economic recession and increased competition from other towns in northern Michigan that had become larger than Pontiac beginning in the 1850s. The closure of two local mills in 1865 and 1866 caused significant economic hardships for local businesses throughout the region including those at Mt Pleasant aforesaid mill which were then closed down by orderOf Governor Yates afterCN railroads started providing transportation between Detroit and Ann Arbor bypassing Flint (the original location).
