The city was also home to several colleges and universities including Wayne State University (now Wayne State University–Detroit), Northern Michigan University (now Northern Michigan University–Mio), and Huron Valley Community College before they merged into Wayne State in 1988. Today, Wayne State remains one of America's leading universities with over 1,700 students enrolled in undergraduate programs across 14 faculties/departments and more than 50 research programs focus on social sciences, humanities and management studies amongst others Pontiac has also been called "the heartland city" because it supports most aspects OFMSA - American Manufacturing Council - member companies located throughout much or all upper Great Lakes states making up about 60%of total output nationally

Pontiac is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, located about 30 miles northwest of Detroit and about 65 miles southwest of Lansing. The population was 174,604 at the 2010 census. Pontiac has been a center for manufacturing and automotive engineering since its founding in 1892. The city's name comes from a small stream that flows through it, the "Pontiac" being French for "bridge over." Pontiac was first settled by farmers in the area now known as east Flint Township on a peninsula formed by two forks of the Kawkawa River. It became an important transportation junction during the early days of automobile travel when it served as both a crossing point on the Ottawa and Huron rivers, and as a hub for ore transport to dealerships near Detroit. The first automobiles were made in Pontiac by George Barrett and His Manufacturing Company in 1908. In 1927, General Motors purchased Barrett's company and integrated it into their new Cadillac Division. The high-volume production of cars at this time helped keep Pontiac afloat during difficult times during World War II; however, GM discontinued car production after the war ended. Chrysler took over production beginning in 1951; until their bankruptcy in 2007, Chrysler produced more than 100% American-made vehicles here at their main plant south of downtown Pontiac. During most recent decades, Pontiac has experienced decline due to several factors including automation within its manufacturing sector (91% automated), suburbanization (population shifted away from downtown), declines in its automotive engineering industry (due to outsourcing) and increased traffic congestion around City Hall which has led to multiple attempts by city officials to lure businesses back downtown or make changes to existing zoning laws so that they would allow more room for shopping or office development adjacent to City Hall while still allowing access to traffic arteries such as I-96/I-495
Pontiac was founded in 1814 as a small town on the shores of Lake Huron in what is now Detroit. The town grew quickly, and by 1826 had become a major shipping center for Michigan's agricultural industry. Pontiac became a state capital in 1837, and during its time as the state capital it became known for its high-quality pottery and phoenixes, or ceramic figurines that were popular at the time. The city of Pontiac was founded in 1849, and rapidly grew into one of the largest cities in Michigan. In 1861 Pontiac helped lead the fight against American slavery, leading to the Battle of Saginaw River. In 1870 Pontiac became an official U.S. port for goods coming from Canada, and prospered until World War II when it lost much of its economic power due to declines in shipping traffic and manufacturing. After World War II, Pontiac regained some of its former stature as a commercial center with new industrial development but also experienced significant social decline during the late 20th century.
