Pontiac is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Ottawa County. The population was 596 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Michigan after Detroit and Lansing. Pontiac is also one of the most populous cities in Huron County, with 1,362 residents as of 2015. The first village to be established in present-day Pontiac was called "Wolverine" because it stood on land that once belonged to the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians. Wolverine was founded by French explorers from Quebec in 1795 during their exploration of what is now east Michigan Territory. The name for present-day Pontiac came about when General Joseph Michilimackinac's army destroyed a Native American village near what is now downtown Pontiac on July 2, 1796 while campaigning against Northern Indian forces led by Chief Tecumseh. Captain John McLaren had been leading an attack on the village when he discovered it burning and sawing down trees nearby. When he learned of this event, McLaren named his unit "Pontiac's Rangers." In 1814, James Kipp won a territorial gunfight at Point Sanilac against United States forces under General Lewis Cass in what is known as Battle at Sanilac Hill or Battle of Green Springs (also known as First Washita War). This event helped secure Canadian control over much of what are today upper Michigan and Ontario counties during the Mexican–American War era. In 1815, Colonel John Saginaw took command of US Forces stationed at Fort Dearborn while Lt.-Colonel George Armstrong Bridger led cavalry troops invading Upper Canada from Lake Superior into southern Ontario - part of his unsuccessful attempt to retake Toronto from British forces subsequent year known as The illicit Invasion (1815). On November 11, 1815, following skirmishes around Detroit and a series of raids throughout Lower Michigan by Redcoats under Lieutenant-Governor Sir Robert Peel’s orders – including three days’ occupation by 100 mounted troopers commanded by Captain Edward Smith - General Jean Baptiste Lorges attacked Saginaw’s force at Point Sanilac using artillery heavy enough to obliterate infantry targets but not powerful enough to cause any damage to warships anchored offshore;[1] resulting in only two casualties among Lorges's Thirty Horse Artillerymen outgunned and outnumbered eighty men6by four hundred Royal Marines under Lieutenant-Governor Macdonald who managed only twenty shots fired before being forced back aboard his ship.[2][3] Although both sides claimed credit for achieving success,[4] many historians have since argued that Lorges overestimated his own capabilities;[5][6][7][8][9] while others have suggested that although victory may have been achieved if fought more cautiously due to naval firepower available then,[10] overall casualties likely would have been far greater had Montreal not intervened: up to 350 dead instead Of 368 killed plus over 540 wounded including Major Andrew McMaster commanding detachment which lost 10 officers & 120 enlisted men; 350 captured instead Of 400 killed plus 300 captured + 20 prisoners taken prisoner In 1821 Iron ore deposits were discovered adjacent to town along Muskegon River providing new impetus for growth around this time period as iron production became an important factor for economy within region becoming even more important starting around 1830 just prior to industrial revolution when production increased 500% through 1860 thanks largely theretofore unknown mineral resources located along river banks where vessels could access them without fear requisitioning large amounts needed annually elsewhere Accordingly mills built rapidly filling needs until all local saltpetre mining ceased operations c1900 leaving town stranded without industry other than agriculture until World War II when major chemical companies moved into area

Polk, President of the United States. The city grew rapidly during the 1850s and 1860s as a result of its importance as a manufacturing center for transportation vehicles, machinery, and other goods. In 1868, Detroit incorporated as a city and began to pursue rapid growth within its boundaries. During this time period, Pontiac emerged as one of the most powerful economic forces on the peninsula due to its position as an important commercial hub for both upper and lower Michigan. In 1903, Pontiac was merged with other nearby towns to form what would eventually be known as Midland Township. Midland Township continues to thrive today as one of the most entrepreneurial communities in central Michigan due to its focus on innovation and entrepreneurship. Pontiac has also been home to several notable cultural institutions such as Eastern State Penitentiary which is currently being rebuilt following a fire that occurred inside the prison in 2015
