The city's economy changed after World War II when production shifted to aircrafts and missiles from autos. However, auto manufacturing continued to be important through the 2000s as global demand for trucks increased; however recent economic times have caused job loss in many industries including steelmaking and telecommunications.

Pontiac is a city in Grand Rapids County, Michigan, United States. The population was 8,351 at the 2010 census. Pontiac is home to the University of Michigan and General Motors plant which manufactures cars and trucks. It is also the birthplace of Midwestern rock band KISS. The area that would become Pontiac was first settled by French colonists in 1795. The town's name comes from the Potawatomi word "pont" meaning "bridge." By 1836, the community had been renamed Pontiac after General John Pemberton's invasion of what is now Indiana Territory during the Mexican–American War. Pemberton's army destroyed much of Fort Dearborn while on its way to Mexico City; as a result, many Native Americans living near Detroit were forced to flee their homes and move into what would become Pontiac. The town quickly developed into an agricultural center with slave labor used for crops such as maize, beans, potatoes and wheat. In 1847, General Dodge bought land in what would later become Pontiac from the original owner of the village site for $3 per acre (or about $2 per kilometer). This land became one of GM's two major plants - Dodge did most of manufacturing here while Chevrolet made engines and other vehicles out-of-town at another location on insistence from George Washington Carver who saw potential in this new technology for food production: "It will be remembered that years ago I foresaw important things coming to America through car manufacture; I prophesied not only cornices but kitchens too... [and] kitchens where men could wash their hands before they went to dinner." Dodge soon began producing large numbers of passenger cars using his patents for a trip rod suspension system; this innovation led to Cadillac being produced here starting in 1903 under contract from Daimler-Benz AG (later Chrysler) during World War 1 as well as other military aircraft designs like Hellcat fighters and V8 Supercars over subsequent decades including current models such as Buick LeSabre (now Cadillac CTS) and Ford Mustang GT350! In 1952 when GM merged with Chrysler Corporation it kept all manufacturing inside GM so then River Rouge became just an assembly plant until 1978 when it joined bus operations with Oldsmar/Luling
