In 1893–94 Ford Motor Company opened its new plant north of town near present day State Street while another plant operated south near Josephine Road until 1978 when both plants were combined into one large facility known now as Ford Field . That same year also saw Edison Electric Corporation establish itsheadquarters there followed by GMC Truck & Bus Division soon after which production moved to that plant until it closed along with other GM plants around 1984 following enactment of The National Industrial Recovery Act which led to mass layoffs throughout much manufacturing across America due to automation

Pontiac was founded in 1806 as a small settlement on the Detroit River. The town rapidly grew and by 1815 it had become an important commercial center. Pontiac was also a major military outpost during the War of 1812. In 1816, General John Butterfield purchased land at the mouth of the Rouge River and began to build what would become known as Butterfield Station. The village eventually became known as Pontiac after General Butterfield's home town in Ireland. The city of Pontiac was incorporated in 1826 and quickly became one of Michigan's largest centers for commerce and industry. By 1830, Pontiac had reached its peak with over 1,000 businesses operating in the city. However, economic decline began to take hold in Pontiac during the 1840s and 1850s, due to factors such as increasing competition from other cities in Michigan and increased immigration from Hungary and other eastern Europe. In 1861, violence erupted between local citizens over disagreements about municipal elections results which led to the outbreak of the American Civil War. During the war, Pontiac served as a Union stronghold until it fell to Confederate forces late in 1862. Afterward, trade slowly resumed within the city limits but continuing financial difficulties led to its fall into disrepair by 1865. Despite this decline, however, Pontiac remains an important community today with more than 100 residents living within its boundaries
