The history of Pontiac begins with John Dickey who came to this area in 1835 looking for new land to explore after his participation in the war with Native American tribes east of the Mississippi River. He found land on what is now part of Lansing Township but did not begin construction until 1840 because he needed money to buy supplies necessary for his explorations. He named his new settlement after General George Washington's army during the Whiskey Rebellion – Fort Wayne (later called Detroit). The first settler was John Purdy who arrived about 1840; he built a log cabin and farmstead on what is now west side of Main Street between Cass Avenue and White Street. Other early settlers included David McNaught (1841), James Wade (1844), Andrew Haggerty (1846), Solomon Browning (1848), Samuel Saugart (1850), Nicholas Eaton (1851-52), Job Hines (1854-55), Isaac Larkin(died 1865)), Michael Cavanaugh(appointed civil clerk 17 January 1861)and Daniel Conroy( appointed justice 5 October 1861). In 1847, General Josiah Warren took control of Indian Affairs under President James Kanesborough Shannon following passage of Act No.. 442 which authorized United States territorial expansion into Michigan Territory including all present day Ottawa County free from British rule In December 1847, Dickey sold his holdings in Fort Wayne to Warren for $3200 cash . At that time there were only five families living in Fort Wayne with around 30 people working on agriculture or trade . By 1850 there had grown up aroundFort Wayne about 60 people including some soldiers garrisoned there ; building began on large later brick structures such as courthouse Annexation Block #1 above West Side RR tracks & School House addition behind present day Masonic Temple located just east side & rear Of current Ford dealership lot . By 1860 most residents had moved away except 1 family whose name still remains unknown; they may have been among those who removed their property when local services stopped operations due mainly to decline in prices for lumber etc., following Civil War which ended with Union victory over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House ..... Development slowed down again primarily due demand by larger enterprises such as GM starting production at Flint Proving Grounds near Grand Rapids rather than send employees southward where competition was high ..... Passenger service ceased between Detroit & Toronto beginning 7 November 1914 when Canadian Northern Railway acquired section line ..... Passenger trains stopped running 9 November 1951 when Canadian National Railroad assumed ownership .. ... On 11 July 1955 GMs first small truck factory opened at this location making parts available direct from suppliers ...... Today much activity takes place within Downtown Pontiac centered around Light Rail Transit Station/Bus Terminal/Parking Garage adjacent To Old Federal Courthouse

Pontiac, Michigan is a city in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 9,571 at the 2010 census. Pontiac was founded in 1821 by John C. Calhoun and named for General William Henry Pontiac who fought against the British during the War of 1812. The first post office in Pontiac opened in 1827. In 1830, commissioners from Detroit agreed to become separate townships within Washtenaw County; as a result, Pontiac lost its status as a village and became just another town in the county line. In 1848, Governor Stevens approved an act to create Washtenaw County out of part of Wayne County which had been formed from portions of Shiawassee and Ottawa counties after the Mexican American War; this act created Flint Township and other townships within that new county along with Pontiac Village (later renamed Midland) as well as parts of Macomb and Oakland counties. By 1850, all but one township - Midland - had been established within what would later be called Pontiac Township; however, it still remained subject to general warrants issued by Wayne County authorities until 1893 when it was made a part of Washtenaw County proper effective November 1st. The first school building in Pontiac was erected on West Main Street between State and Maple Streets in 1851-52 under the direction of Miss Eliza Kappeldorffer; it served both public schools alumnus and their families until 1861 when the government moved to buildings on Woodward Avenue near Cass Avenue. That year also saw the opening of homeopathic medical doctor Drs Cook & Co.'s dispensary located at 401 Niles Road; this dispensary operated until 1886 when it closed due to lack of patients or money for repairs/maintenance). In 1865 local farmers banded together to form "The Republican Farmer's Association" which advocated for agricultural improvement initiatives such as higher prices for goods necessary for sustenance while opposing Radical Reconstruction policies which they saw as favoritism towards urban interests over rural ones. Their efforts paid off beginning in 1870 when state Appropriation Acts were passed providing seed money for development projects throughout the area including reclamation works on Wabash River north of downtown Pontiac while also authorizing construction of new bridges over Big Muddy River east of town center; these projects led directly to increased production levels across many agricultural sectors following establishment of interurban transportation systems allowing easier access to markets outside villages/townships limits thereby stimulating economic growth not only inside those municipalities but also farther away into neighboring counties including Macomb proper where some early settlers had settled prior to moving westward into present day Flint Township . During World War I local men enlisted with units serving overseas rather than accepting offers from agents posing as military commanders offering them bounties if they could return home alone without being captured or killed so that their families could enjoy relatively comfortable lives upon their return although there were no guarantees such arrangements generally proved successful especially since most soldiers returned home with little or no understanding about how war worked other than witnessing combat firsthand). On October 15th 1920 United States Senator Hiram Johnson announced his candidacy for President at a rally held at Ford Auditorium on Woodward Avenue opposite Science Hall where he defeated incumbent Woodrow Wilson by 52% to 48%. A poll conducted three days later showed Johnson leading Wilson 49%–41%. On November 3rd1920 Johnson won by 524 votes out OF THE 792 cast resulting In him becoming America’s 44th President effective January 20th 1921
