Consequently, many firearm dealers did not open up shop until after World War II when prohibition ended! After World War II ended (1945), new legislation passed which banned ownership of handguns with certain exceptions! As a result of this ban on handguns, most gun handles businesses closed down throughout the country!! It became an important manufacturing center during both world wars, with significant contributions to both sides of the Cold War. Pontiac's rich history can be traced back to 1837 when Native American chiefs negotiated land grants from Great Lakes Governor George Heriot for a settlement on their eastern edge near present day downtown Pontiac. After several failed attempts, French fur trader Jean L’Enfant arrived in 1838 with his Expedition de la Presse (Expedition of Truth) to survey and explore Lake Superior Territory for future holdings west of the Mackinac Bridge. With access to deep water through three locks at Saginaw Bay, L’Enfant named his new settlement after his patron saint: Sts Peter and Paul Parish (now known as Old Saint Peters). In 1840, construction began on a small wooden fortification called Fort Donelson near what is now downtown Pontiac to protect settlers from Indian raids led by Chief Tecumseh Morrissey. The fort served as a military post until it was abandoned in 1847 following Tecumseh's death while escaping into Canada; however, it remains one of only two remaining standing buildings from that period within our city limits today! In 1843, General John Custer attacked Red Cloud's Sioux village at Yellow Springs Valley just south of present day Pontiac during what is now known as Custer's Fight – one of many famous battles fought across North America during the early 19th century! During World War II, Pontiac played an important role as both an industrial center for war production overseas and home for thousands of workers who produced everything from tanks to radios under conditions often harsher than those experienced anywhere else in America. Notable products include P-47 Thunderbolts operated by United States Army Air Forces pilots over Europe; 1945–1946 Ford Pinto coupes built at nearby Dearborn Assembly Plant; Plymouth Fury subcompact cars imported into North America from Japan; among others! Many people still remember their childhood experiences playing inside "The Girders" – Leslie Street’s largest Manufacturers Warehouse until its demolition in 2001 – or going out to shopping mall located just east off I-475 south before Interstate 75 splits into four lanes north/south running through town towards Detroit! Pontiac experienced numerous surges throughout its histrionic growth including prohibition which caused some businesses closures along with social unrest that culminated with violence on multiple occasions throughout most part between 1906-1975 followed by relative peace thereafter until quite recently when crime rates have increased significantly especially around certain areas such as Downtown where there has been increased gun violence particularly targeting young men aged 15-24 year olds
