It is said that one of the first Europeans to visit what is now Pontiac were French traders who stopped there on their way from Mackinac Island to London early in 1795. They named this part of what is today Michigan “Pontiac” after their ship “Pontoise” which they sailed upriver from France on July 26th, 1795 en route to Great Lakes trading posts with Native Americans (the land where present day Pontiac sits was then part of Indiana). The first permanent white settler in what is now Pontiac was George Washington Dixon who arrived about 1800 with his family from Maryland and built a log cabin near present day Southport on Georgian Bayou (now called Lake Huron). It would be another hundred years before any other European settlers came to live hereabouts!

Pontiac was founded in 1874 by John Nolen and his family as a small village near the present-day intersection of I-275 and US 280.
