Pontiac is a city located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 56,717 at the 2010 census. Pontiac's namesake is General George Washington, who was born in the town and died there in 1797. Pontiac has been called "The Arsenal of Democracy" for its role as a manufacturing center during World War I and II. Pontiac's history began with the founding of the village of Pontiac by colonists from New York on September 5, 1807. The first settlers were farmers who arrived in small boats on the upper Detroit River. By 1830, nearly all of what is now Pontiac had been settled when Daniel Boone discovered land here on July 4, 1831. The name "Pontiac" originated with John Beal, an Englishman who purchased 200 acres (80 hectares) along Detroit River near present-day downtown Pontiac on August 30, 1827 from Nicholas Lesseps for $2 per acre (0.81 km²). The village grew rapidly due to its location at one of the two points where fur traders could bring goods upriver toDetroit marketplaces and also because it became an important transportation hub for goods moving between Detroit and other parts of Michigan and downriver to Illinois. In 1840, voters approved a charter that made Pontiac an incorporated Village under which it retained autonomy but shared many common resources with neighboring villages such as Saginaw and Bay City. During World War I, Pontiac played an important role as both a munitions plant and military supply depot due to its location near Saginaw Bay; it produced over 1 million rounds of ammunition alone during that conflict. After hostilities ended in 1918, much of what was left behind were turned into new homes for residents displaced by war efforts; most notably: the federally funded rehabilitation project known as Belle Isle Plantation which remains today as one of downtown Pontiac's most distinguishing landmarks.. A large part of postwar American culture came from refugees coming ashore after World War II including many from Asia such as Japanese Americans who had been forced into labor camps or internment camps across America before Pearl Harbor . Pontiac, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Oakland County. The population was 3,908 at the 2010 census. The name Pontiac is derived from Potosi Creek which flows through the city. The first known visit to Pontiac occurred on November 10, 1795 by Captain John Mackenzie and his party when they were exploring what is now Kalkaska County. Their mission was to explore a new route for the Great Lakes trade that had been discovered by fur traders near present-day Traverse City. In 1801, General Andrew Jackson's military expedition arrived in Detroit to take possession of land west of the river Rouge as part of his effort to secure control over all Northwest Michigan Territory before he moved into Ohio. He ordered General Winfield Scott's army to move eastward along the lower peninsula and seize any towns or villages therein that did not support him militarily or financially during this time period known as "The War for Independence." On January 20, 1803, Scott's army came across a small village called Pontiac on Canoga Lake about 12 miles north ofDetroit with about 50 residents under its command. At this time Pontiac was part of Muskegon County and not Oakland County as it would become later in history. On July 4, 1804, while skirmishing against Indian forces northeast of Detroit near Mound Parkman Point on Grand River (the world's largest artificial lake), American BrigadierGeneral George Armstrong Custer killed five Native Americans including their chief at what has come to be known as "Custer’s Massacre" in what is now Houghton County, Minnesota). This event led directly to United States annexation of Canada which took place on September 1, 1867 without formal declaration by President James K Polk from within the United States government. Pontiac became an important center for transportation after being connected with both Detroit and Toledo through two wagon roads called the Western Road and Erie Canal Roads respectively which ran concurrently through downtown Pontiac until they were discontinued in 1853 due mainly to bad weather conditions caused by frozen ground frost plus increased costs associated with construction projects associated with layering several feet (1 meter) deep snow every season combined with incessant rainstorms that created waterlogged conditions throughout most year round especially during winter months leading up to springtime when ice receded leaving open areas susceptible to mudslide accidents similar also happened during summermonths leading up to falltime when leaves changed color creating opportunities for mosquitoes which made travel difficult if not impossible especially during off-season months when temperatures frequently plunged below freezing causing Mudslide Accidents even occurring during high school football games making access difficult especially if there were no sidewalks available) resulting in more than 100 fatalities between 1800-1960). In 2006 Plantation Developers Wayne & Karen Lancaster donated approximately $170 million towards classroom renovation project at nearby Grosse Pointe High School where classes will resumed Spring 2007 following nearly two decades interruption caused by redevelopment efforts adjacentquelk campus) further establishing Flint Hills community adjacentquelk campus within Flint Township boundaries
Pontiac is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is the county seat of Oakland County and is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. Pontiac was founded on November 3, 1806 by Major General George Mackenzie as a fur- traders post on the Rouge River. The name "Pontiac" comes from nearby Kawkawaquoddy territory, meaning "place where wild ducks hang." The first settlement in what would become Pontiac was at what is now known as Frenchtown west of town on the Rouge River. The first settler was Nicholas Michaud, who built a cabin in 1812. He and his family were followed by others over time, until all but two families left for unknown reasons around 1827. Icarus McCormick came to America in 1829 with his mother and sister Maria, settling near present day Mount Pleasant Township northeast of town on Ottawa Creek (now Opdyke Road). They cleared land and started a gristmill that year; it became one of the first mills in Michigan. McCormick also owned an sawmill across from today's downtown Pontiac store building before moving it to its current site east of town in 1840 when he purchased land adjoining Trinity Presbyterian Churchyard just north of modern day I-94 interchange
