Owosso is a town in the county of Michigan, United States. The population was 2,831 at the 2010 census. Owosso is located on the Ottawa River, about 12 miles (19 km) south-southwest of Grand Rapids and 16 miles (25 km) east of Flint. The first permanent settler in what is now Owosso was Nicholas Krieger who built a log cabin in 1824. He and his family were the first to arrive in what would become Owosso Township. In 1828, Christopher Fenton purchased 640 acres (248 ha) of land from Nicholas Krieger and named it Fenton Township after himself. In 1830, Peter Armstrong bought 714 acres (269 ha) from Fenton and changed its name to Armstrong Township. In 1834, John Ahern arrived in Owosso with his brother Michael and started farming corn on 810 acres (300 ha). They began building a house on the present site of City Hall in 1840. The Aherns still live there today as well as their son Tom Ahern and their daughter Jane Ahern-Butterfield. In 1847, James Wacker moved into town from rural Muskegon County along with his wife Anna Purdy Wacker; they set up shop at 5th & Woodward near Main Street before moving across Woodward to 4th & Maple where they opened a grocery store which served as the nucleus for what became known as Wacker's Drug Store which still stands today at 4th & Maple Avenue NW corner street intersection
