Owosso is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the Ottawa River. The population was 2,752 at the 2010 census. Owosso is part of the Detroit metropolitan area and is the second most populous municipality in Wayne County after Ann Arbor. In 1855, Stephen Ayer bought large tracts of land along both sides of the river for $1 per acre from David Evans who had settled there about three years earlier. Ayer founded Dearborn Heights around this time as a small village with about 20 residents surrounding an older fortification built by French traders about 4 km upstream on the Rouge River where today's Dearborn Park stands. The post office called Dearborn Heights "Dearborn", but changed its name to Owosso in 1878 due to improper spelling by then-mail carrier Alfred Haines (Alfred Haines Post Office). The first store opened at 6 S Main Street in 1889; by 1911 there were six stores open with a total population over 1,000 residents including 100 lodges for miners during construction of Ford Road through Owosso during that same year which connected downtown Dearborn with villages upriver includingowasso near present day Warrenville This community prospered until World War II when production dropped off because water levels went down making it difficult to extract coal from under ground mines using traditional methods such as bucketing or shoveling while also disrupting social patterns typical among men working long hours underground without rest etc..
