Owosso, Michigan is a town in the Kalamazoo-Washtenaw County, Michigan region, United States. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Owosso goes back to 1831 when John Owosso started a small grocery store in what is now downtown Owosso. In 1884, Augustus Fenton moved his family from Flint to Owosso and opened a general store on Main Street. In 1888, Mr. Fenton's son, John Fenton Jr., bought the store and continued to run it until 1951 when it was sold to Harry & Gladys Mollenkamp who operated it until 1984 when it was bought by Gail & Lloyd Winters. In 1984, Gail & Lloyd Winters sold the business to their daughter-in-law Deborah Nourse who operated it until 2000 when she sold it to Thomas Eckhardt who ran it until 2006 when he sold it to Rick Hogenkamp who operates it today as Owego's Fifth Street Grocery Store. The early owosso residents were farmers with stores being located along the banks of the Ottawa River near where they raised their crops and hunted game. Settlement began on a larger scale with several hundred people settling in what is now downtown Owosso around 1830 under title deeds or lot sales by pioneers such as John Owensós and Augustus Fenlon In 1884 Alfred Ransom purchased 640 acres (248 hectares) of land east of present day Owosso from David Duchaine for $4 an acre He named his new community "Ransomville" after Alfred Ransom himself This settlement grew rapidly due to lumber trade opportunities opening up along the newly completed Erie Canal which crossed through town in 1825 linking Detroit with Buffalo via Midland By 1840 there were over 1,000 people living in "Ransomville" including 300 men and 100 women plus 30 slaves The first school was built that year on property donated by Mrs . Ransom . That same year saw also first church service conducted here with Rev . Wm Smith officiating In 1845/46 three families pooled their resources together and erected a log cabin known as Old Parsonage which served as both home and school for six months before being burned down by Indian attackers during an uprising against white settlers nearby

Owosso is one of nine cities in Delta County and is part of the Grand Rapids-Wixom Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first reference to Owosso comes from 1848 when it was spelled "Wixom." The name change may have been due to competition for water rights with nearby Kalamazoo and Battle Creek. In 1881, Owosso became a town when it amalgamated with other towns in Delta County (including Howell, East Holland, and White Lake). Between 1901 and 1903, Owosso's post office changed its name to Owosso after a local stream that flowed through town. It wasn't until 1907 that the present spelling was adopted; however, earlier versions included an "s" sound because some residents pronounced it as "saw." In 1972, Owosso's ZIP code was 84523 which helped spur development around its schools and downtown area which has grown into one of the most popular areas in town for shopping and dining experiences. Today there are several high-rise buildings along Washington Avenue near US-23 including Millennium Tower & Kohl’s Marketplace while smaller businesses continue to thrive within walking distance including Spoonful Café & Bakery and Third Street Brewery

The Owosso area was first settled by the Potawatomi people and then by the French in the 17th century. In 1809, General John Polson created what is now Owosso Township from land awarded to him by Napoleon Bonaparte. The town of Owosso was founded on May 10, 1836 by James Wacker and John Sibley as a result of land speculation in that year. In 1851, the village of Owosso merged with nearby townships to form the new township of Owosso. The town of Owosso was renamed after General George Washington during World War I because so many American servicemen were killed or wounded there during that conflict. On November 15, 1938, local officials adopted a resolution recognizing Polish-American veterans as citizens of owosso township. On October 16, 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt made it an official United States City name for owosso township and all its successor municipalities retroactive to that date In 1965-1966 a major construction project began on M-6 highway which crossed through owosso from east to west between Marquette and Detroit but ultimately failed due to lack of funding On July 1st 2006 school board approved a referendum question asking for approval to add an extra day per week to summer break in order to accommodate more students who attend college full time
