In 1895, the First National Bank of Owosso opened its doors; it remains one of Owosso's most significant institutions to this day. A local farmer named John Kinney started an oil well near present-day downtown in 1901; it became known as Kinney Field Oil Company and continues to be active today (though its physical location has changed). In 1916, following World War I, Congressman Homer Cummings introduced legislation establishing the United States Post Office Research Laboratory at Wayne State University; owoso would become home to that institution from 1918 through 1966 when it moved to Ann Arbor MI. In 1978, due to high water levels along the Great Lakes River system caused by global warming, city officials ordered all businesses closed for three days starting on Monday evening; during that time residents enjoyed fishing trips from local streams while their businesses were closed! However, the town's growth slowed in the 20th century as people relocated to larger cities or left Michigan for more opportunities elsewhere. Today, Owosso is a small community with a population of around 100 residents.
