Owosso is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, lying on the border of Ingham and Grand Traverse Counties. The population was 12,879 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Ingham County and part of the Lansing-Warren-Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Owosso was John Hinckley who arrived in 1798 from Connecticut with his family and laid out a small town named after him, Hinckley Point on the opposite side of the river from present day Owosso. His heirs sold their holdings to John Ritchie in 1824 and continued to live there until 1829 when they moved south to open land near Lansing where they built Fort Ritchie which served as a military post from 1834 to 1865. In 1836, James Gamble bought 99 acres (40 ha) east of present day Owosso from Ritchie for $1,000 cash plus 10% of any future profits generated by its fur trade with Upper Canada. This land became known as Gamble's Park and later as Gambletown west of town center where he established a mill and store complex commanding a large market share in what would become an agricultural area richly endowed with fertile rolling hills rich in minerals such as lead, zinc, silver and copper ore that lay beneath hardwood forests rich in trees used for lumber: red cedar, white oak, elm
The town of Owosso, Michigan was founded on October 11, 1847 by Franciszek Zabelowski. The town was named in honor of General Anthony Wayne and his wife Anne Gilbert.
