Owosso is a small town in Shiawassee County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,534 at the 2010 census. Owosso is located on the southern shore of the Muskegon River and has a small downtown area with several stores and businesses. It is home to Owosso High School which serves students from grades 9-12. The Owosso Historical Society Museum provides education about local history and culture in Owosso. The first sighting of what would become Owosso occurred on July 4, 1814 when French explorers named it "Joliette." In 1825, Indian traders trading with the Ottawa Indians near present-day Toledo discovered deposits of lead ore near what is now known as Owosso. A group of men led by George Rogers Clark explored the area in 1827 and named it after James Augustus O'Oswego, an American Revolutionary War officer who had fought for General Anthony Wayne at Battle of Fallen Timbers. In 1830, a post office was established at present-day Owosso; however, it did not open until 1835 because there were no mailboats available to transport messages across the river then. By 1840, lead mines were beginning to be developed in what would becomeOWOSSO The first school in OWOSSO opened September 10th 1870 under the auspices of Township trustees John Waddell (1811-1892) and Jesse Ruel (1813-1885). At that time only one room was used for instruction with five pupils attending each day; however over time more classrooms and other facilities were erected including a gymnasium/birthplace where local hero General David Dixon died aged 73 years on October 26th 1902 following an illness brought on by typhoid fever; this building still stands today as Unit 603 Building #1 at OHSA’s old campus off Main Street across from First Baptist Church! Classes continued even during World War II as there was little else to do around here so many teachers served in armed forces during that time! Owosso is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the Owosso River. The population was 5,621 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Midland–Lenawee metropolitan area and is considered to be one of the "rusty" Midwest towns with strong cultural ties to its agricultural roots. The first permanent settler in what would become Owosso was Abram Fenton in 1836. In 1855, Wm. Hance built a sawmill on the river and began trading goods with other farmers in this region for flour, meat, potatoes, eggs and other goods from areas such as Illinois and Ohio. By 1861, there were over fifty residents living in Owosso according to local histories; by 1870 there were over one hundred people living hereabouts! One reason why Owosso became so prosperous during these early years was its location – just north of Toronto on the Ottawa River – which made it an ideal spot for grain trade and transportation hub for all of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula countryside that grew up around it (including present-day Ann Arbor). Additionally, owoseans themselves were some of the earliest settlers hereabouts: many had come downriver from their home communities in Canada during the 1840s looking for a new life after experiencing poverty and political unrest back home at that time; they quickly assimilated into their new surroundings while continuing to produce crops/livestock (and trading goods back home) along with building schools, churches and businesses (such as a general store). In 1875-76 surveyors erected a schoolhouse on land donated by Daniel Naylor at what would eventually become downtown Owosso – making this one of only two public schools founded within five miles of where Owosso now stands! This landmark structure still stands today and can be seen from most parts of town; inside you’ll find an interesting display case containing items related to local history including historic photos dating back to when OWOSSO first started teaching itself how to read! During World War I hostilities broke out between America & Great Britain; as result much production took place away from home soil due to shortages caused by both sides’ war efforts (Owosso specifically benefitted greatly due to its proximity to major Detroit). This meant that even though many owoseans enlisted in military service throughout WWI they could not vote or hold office since those activities were controlled by government officials based outside their community/region – something that continues today albeit more subtly through things like being able to take driver’s licences but not owning cars!). Hance whose passionate leadership secured passage of several important bills & ordinances hereabouts throughout his tenure starting around WWII including creating modern day city streetscapes etc.) Today there are over 621 residents residing withinowossoolimits reflecting its growthrate since becoming a municipality back then 😃👍🏼
