Owosso is a town in Ottawa County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,544 at the 2010 census. The name "Owosso" is derived from the Ojibwe word "owa," meaning "water." The first settler in Owosso was George Hinson in 1824. In 1825, Augustus Begay and his brother-in-law Jacob Applegate settled in what is now Owosso Township. John Socko settled also in what is now Owosso Township on the west side of the river in 1830. When Indian Removal began in 1837, most of the Ojibwe people left their villages near Detroit and moved to Indian Territory along the St. Joseph River. A few hundred remained behind in Owosso Township and started a new village called White Rapids on Black Creek east of present-day Owosso village. The white settlers were lured by offers of free land or cash bonuses for joining Company M (the precursor to the federal government's Land Grant program). Many arrived with little understanding about American society and culture because they had been raised among their own tribal members who spoke their original language fluently. In 1847, Frederick Heiser purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land east of present-day Owosso village from some of this remaining Ojibwe community for $4 per acre ($/acre today). He then built an early sawmill there which still stands today according to local legend; it Grinds logs twice daily until 3 p.m., when it shuts down for lunch while its operators go into town to buy groceries or visit friends outside the mill gates during lunchtime! This mill has been rebuilt several times since then but its oldest incarnation still operates as a tourist attraction – you can even get up close andpersonalized with the saw blade!
