In 1948-1949 two large television stations – WXYZ-TV (channel 7) and WJRT-TV (channel 4) – relocated from Detroit to Oak Park under then-president Harry Truman because no other TV station could be located within commuting range for both viewers in downtown Detroit and those outside downtown.. After years spent struggling against another city annexation attempt by neighboring River Rouge Township – which succeeded but only after extensive protests by residents – voters passed an ordinance authorizing incorporation into Oakland County on November 3rd, 1935 via referendum ratified by 64% of those voting participated...the vote marked not only entrance into new territory but also reassertion by local citizens following years during which township officials had used coercion tactics with little success in unifying various factions amongoakpark homeowners... oak park became an enclave within Oakland County rather than simply an annexing municipality like River Rouge Township had been...it remains one of just three municipalities incorporated into Oakland County proper since 1935 without any vote by local residents... despite this history many aspects currently associated withOakPark likely originated outside its borders: such as its location relative to major shopping centers throughout metroDetroit; high percentage rateOf female ownership/commanding jobs inside borough boundaries; concentration OF high income earners (>$75k)/working families (<$25k); heavy reliance on automotive manufacturing within borough boundaries... Despite these challenges many residents continue To Call themselves "OAK PARKERS"

The first white people to live in Oak Park were the Potawatomi. They arrived in 1812 and stayed until 1834. The first black people to live in Oak Park were slaves who came from Kentucky during the 1840s.
