Oak Park is a city in the US state of Michigan. It was founded in 1837 by citizens of the town of Bay City, then part of Detroit, as a new town to be located on the east bank of the St. Clair River opposite Indiana State University. The population was 26,030 at the 2010 census. The first European settler in what is now Oak Park was William Hickey, who arrived in 1836 and purchased 2 lots on which he built a cabin. John Hill bought one lot from Hickey and started building his home there in 1840. In 1846, Nicholas Rowe made a Donation for School within Village limits and donated land for High School near where he lived with his two sons Nicholas and George . Mr . Rowe had been an Englishman who had traveled through Canada and America before settling down in this area while engaged in mercantile pursuits. He left behind him descriptions of many beautiful natural sites including some acreage now within our limits lying between Dearborn Street on one side and Wabash Avenue on the other side of the river – highly prized by later residents for its agricultural potentialities! High school instruction first took place at home until 1850 when it moved to Woodward Academy (later renamed Wayne Tech). In 1862, George Wertz became Principal at Woodward Academy which also served as United States Custom House during that time period. With rapid growth throughout much of Upper Michigan due to industrial development around Detroit, school facilities were needed closer to downtown so Woodward Academy relocated back into Oak Park early in the 20th century becoming Our Lady's High School (now known as Jesuit High) which housed grades 9-12 from 1902-1910 followed by Holy Cross high school from 1910-1963. In 1907 Holy Cross vacated their old building at 309 Saginaw Rd., just west of present day Elmhurst Drive NW cornering Dearborn Street – moving across Elmhurst Drive into what is now Home Depot parking lot next door! From 1927 until 1955 it was called Southridge Elementary School/Middle School; thence Southridge Annexe Elementary/Secondary School (1955-1965), following annexation by nearby Highland Park Township
