Oak Park is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 46,814 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Oakland County and one of the most populous cities in Michigan. Oak Park is considered a "downtown" area with a concentration of businesses and services near downtown, as well as an inner-city community with lower-income residents and more limited access to public services. The area now known as Oak Park was first settled by Potawatomi Indians in 1795. It was named for Sir George Arthur Oakley, 5th Baronet (1745–1827), who had been created a Viscount Botolph Castle on 15 October 1785. In 1801, Detroit became the capital of Michigan Territory; Oak Park was incorporated as part of that city on November 3, 1802. In 1835, when Detroit annexed what were then rural areas east of Inkster Road and south of Grand River Avenue within its limits, it decided to annex all of Oakland County including what is now Oak Park along with parts of Washtenaw County and Rouge County which would become Ann Arbor later that year. Population growth stalled during this time due to lack of available land for development and relatively high taxes levied on new settlers in comparison to those collected by Detroit from old settlers who did not move away or convert to Roman Catholicism like many other easterners did during this time period . In 1840s US president James Kahl predicted that by 1850 there would be over 100 million people living westward within territorial boundaries because American territory had expanded so rapidly across states since his election victory four years earlier; however no such happenstance occurred . Oak Park is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the western edge of the Upper Peninsula. The population was 21,853 at the 2010 census. The city's name comes from an area of oak trees that once thrived in its vicinity. Oak Park is home to several colleges and universities including Grand Rapids Community College and Wayne State University. In 1824, Michiganders petitioned for incorporation as a village and it was granted by the Legislature on July 1, 1825. On January 16, 1868, after years of deliberation due to concerns about railroad construction in nearby Clinton Township, the town charter was amended to allow for two banks: one jointly owned by John Duchamp and his son-in-law Augustus Saint Johns (the father of Jadwiga Stanislaus Duchamp), and another jointlyowned by John Purdy (a partner in Phelps Dodge) and James Bowman (owner of a sawmill). On February 3rd 1865, Abraham Lincoln delivered a speech at Elmhurst Seminary in which he recommended establishment of "a free school within this township" because "it would be nutriment to many young men who have not access to education." After successfully lobbying Congress for passage of the Morrill Act – which provided financial support for schools – Oak Park received its own school district on May 20th 1870 which became operational on September 15th that year with Simeon Hutchins as Superintendent. In 1924–1925 two new high schools were built; one near downtown Oakland Park and one on Ionia Road south of town. Oak Park experienced rapid growth following World War II when businesses increased their hiring opportunities throughout Michigan due to war production shortages caused by America's entry into World War II. A large housing development called Lakeview began developing around 1945-46 adjacent to downtown Oakland Park with over 100 residences becoming available newly annexed into the city limits during that time period alone! By 1970 there were 278 residents living inOakPark compared to just 19 residents living within Clinton Township according to historical records!
Oak Park was once a small, rural town in the Michigan Territory. The town was renamed after General James K. Polk, who served as President of the United States in 1848-1849. The town's first post office opened on Valentine's Day, 1847. In 1881, Oak Park became a village and it has remained that way since then.
