Oak Park was founded in 1837 by George and John Oak. The town grew rapidly due to the opening of the Erie Canal in 1851, which made it easy to get goods and people to and from the Great Lakes region. By 1865, Oak Park had over 1,000 residents. In 1870, the city limits were expanded to include what is now Highland Park. The city became a borough in 1898 and then a municipality in 1913. The population peaked at around 25,000 during the 1960s before declining steadily until its decline in 2000.
