Oak Park is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 26,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area and is located on the eastern edge of Dearborn County. Oak Park was organized in 1837 as a village, and became a city in 1898. The name "Oak Park" comes from an oak tree that grew near where it now stands. The first settler to live in what would become Oak Park was John Parker, who arrived in 1836 from Ireland with his family. He named his new land "Oak Park," after one of his trees which he saw while travelling through upper Michigan on horseback. In 1840, John Cook set up shop here and began selling flour and other goods from a wagon ride he made down Center Road from Grand Rapids to Detroit later that year. In 1845, James McKay bought some shares of Cook's flour business for $550 USD - this would be Mackay's largest purchase until he sold it all to George Wagoner in 1897 for $2 million dollars! McKay also founded the first Bank of America branch west of the Mississippi River (in Highland Heights), which opened its doors on November 17, 1846! By 1850, there were over 100 businesses operating here! In 1857-1858, both Adam Clayton Powell Jr.'s father and uncle had their homes built here - both men served as Mayor and City Treasurer respectively before moving on to politics nationally! In 1865 during the American Civil War (the war being fought by Great Britain against Abraham Lincoln's Union army), Oak Park sided with General George McClellan against General Robert E Lee - this led to many nickname changes for people living near or inside Oak Park during that time: "The Hinterlands". One such nickname was "McClellanville" due to all the similarities between McClellan's home county of Virginia (where much of Oak Park lay) and Battlefields around Richmond VA where many soldiers died; like Hickory Hill Cemetery back then... lots & lots of trees! In 1870 when McKinley became President & Righteous POTUS (& took office after Franklin D Roosevelt assassination) things changed again...Oak park residents got called "McKinleyites"... whatever you want to call 'em though! :) During World War I & II (1914-1945), our town went through some really tough times: unemployment rates reached 20%, 30%… even 40%. However – thanks largely to our amazing city government – we've come out relatively unscathed so far! Our median household income has increased significantly since 2000 (+$40K!), meanwhile crime rates have decreased by about 25%. We're proud Allegheny County citizens – we love our community!"
