Oak Park is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the eastern side of the Mackinac Bridge. The population was 61,044 as of 2010, making it the second-largest city in Michigan after Detroit. It is also one of the most populous cities in Detroit proper and its metropolitan area, which includes all of Wayne County and portions of Oakland County, has a population of 684,624 as of 2019. Oak Park was founded by Germans in 1837 and became a village in 1851. The City of Oak Park was formed on February 14, 1914 from parts of Gratiot Township and Sanborn Township. On December 3, 1975, part of Dearborn Heights were annexed into Oak Park by vote; this made Dearborn Heights the eighth municipality to be annexed into Oak Park since it was established as a township on July 1, 1961. The town site for what would become Oak Park was selected because it had an open space suitable for settlement and because its location near two major rivers – Huron River to the south and Chicago River to the north – would provide ample water resources for future growth. In 1837 settlers started building homes on land that would eventually become downtown Oak Park today. Thomas Edison built his first experimental line across the Huron River just east of downtownOak park in 1847 while Wireman’s Bridge still stood

Oak Park is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Oakland County. The population was 57,815 at the 2010 census, making it the 8th largest city in Michigan and one of its most populous counties. The large, diverse economy depends on manufacturing, agriculture, transportation, and retail trade. There are also sizable concentrations of African American and Hispanic residents. The earliest settlers in what is now Oak Park were French Catholics who arrived from Canada in 1787. They erected a small settlement near present-day Chicago on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan to escape religious persecution back home. In 1812, Governor John Cavanagh ordered General James Kieft to disband all military forces within ten miles (16 km) of Detroit so that settlers could build homes without fear of being attacked by Native Americans or being used as targets for raids by other fur traders looking for new land to explore. Kieft complied and founded what would become Detroit on July 22, 1813 as a trading post on Shiawassee River east ofpresent-day Oak Park.[2] The first permanent settler in what is nowOak Park was Father Jacques Marquette who came overland from France with his brother Gabrielle Marquette in 1679[3]. Father Marquette built a small fort at present-dayChicago's North Side while exploring present-day Illinois Territory during Jesuit missionary voyages between 1679–80 and 1689–90[4][5]. He named his new post after Saint Ignatius Loyola (1491–1556), discoverer of Christianity's true source – Rome – which he had seen while visiting southern Italy some years earlier[6]. Father Marquette's Fort Dearborn was adjacent to present- day Chicago's Cass Corridor until it was destroyed by British troops during the War for Independence (1763–1765). In 1800s much development took place around Chicago due to advances made by then Vice President Aaron Burr (1757–1838).[7] A surveyor named Nicholas Biddle developed what is now called Northwest Indiana Avenue in 1802 along current Wacker Drive NW just south of downtown Chicago[8][9], providing early impetus for developing this area into an industrial center as well as Oak Park Township northward into MichigandersuchthenorthwestofthecityofDetroit,[10][11] although these lands were not formally annexed into Lansing until 1888[12]. The first company founded here bore this name: Nicholas Biddle & Brothers Warehouse Company.[13] An early settler also known as George Washington crossed Grayslake Road SW from Lansing into oak park late one night sometime before mid 1827 when he led militia against hostile Ojibwe Indians living near Buffalo Ford outside today’s Columbia Heights neighborhood near Ionia Road/South State Street intersection; he met them thereabouts morning following his return journey from raiding their village late last winter night or early morning prior thereto Unknown
Oak Park was founded in 1837 by George Washington Carver. The town and its namesake were named for a grove of oak trees that once stood on the site of today's Oak Park. The first post office in the town was established in 1839. By 1860, Oak Park had a population of 100 people. In 1865, Oak Park became a village and in 1870, it became a city.
