SAM flew its first combat mission in Oak Park on July 16th when two P-38As from 324 Squadron RAF based at Grimsby airfield took off from RAF Billingham to drop supplies to Army units fighting aroundDetroit during World War II. The city's economy has been focused largely on manufacturing since its founding; such industries as automotive parts and plastics have become dominant since then. Automotive production ended in the 1970s but continues now as small businesses produce vehicles for local use or exports. Other major sectors include health care services, education, food processing, wholesale trade and professional services; all with strong growth potential over time. Oak Park is a town in Macomb County, Michigan, United States. The population was 9,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The town was organized on November 3, 1837 by George H. Armstrong and others as the result of a land lottery conducted in that year to select a site for the new county seat of Macomb Township (an event also celebrated as Oak Park's incorporation). The first settler to arrive in what is now Oak Park was James A. McNaught, who arrived on July 2, 1838. Oak Park quickly became an important agricultural center due to its fertile soil and its location just north of Detroit on the Butterfield Road between Cadillac and Highland Avenues. By 1860, there were over 100 businesses in operation in downtown Oak Park with a population of 5,000 people. In 1865–1866, Mayor John Whelan contracted with J&L Lumber Company to build two sawmills operating side by side on North Haven Street near what is now McNaught Elementary School; this project was known as "The Great Northern". In 1870s sawmills began closing down all over America due to competition from cheaper timber sources; however, J&L continued operations until it went bankrupt in 1898. In 1902 J&L's successor company--the Macomb Timber Company--opened two more sawmills at nearby Isabella Furnace; these mills produced lumber until they closed in 1957 and 1958 respectively. "Oak Park" became an official name for the community after that date when local newspapers started using it instead of "Macomb Township". In 1925 city officials decided against naming any streets or intersections after municipal members so that citizens might better distinguish their hometown from other municipalities within the same township/county limits without having to go outside of town for information about their home municipality. Today most residents know both "Oak Park" and "Macomb Township" only vaguely if at all since most street names have been changed or no longer used entirely within recent decades... according to current Statistics Canada data (2011), there are currently only 7 property ownerships registered with both places' namesakes - 1 fewer than there were when both placeNames were established! Today OakPark has some heavy industry left behind but much like many other American towns post-industrialization such as Buffalo or Cleveland it has seen strong redevelopment efforts spearheaded by elected officials throughout recent years including large Pritzker Prize winning mixed use development called Quicken Loans Arena being built right next door
