Novi is a city in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 11,513 at the 2010 census. It is the ninth-largest city in Michigan and the second-largest city in Wayne County. The Novi metropolitan area has a population of 25,711 as of 2018. The first permanent settler in what is now Novi was John Dickinson who arrived on May 12, 1810. He named his new land for George Washington after his visit to that region two years earlier. A post office called Dickinson was established in 1834 and remained open until it closed in 1907. Noviwas incorporated as a village on November 1, 1868, from parts of three other townships: Bellefontaine Township (now part of Ann Arbor), Battle Creek Township (now part of Dearborn Heights), and New Brighton Township (now part of Detroit). In 1897 the name reverted to Novi when it became the town seat of Washtenaw County. On December 15, 1907, the General Assembly changed Washtenaw County's borders by merger with Oakland County to form an enlarged Wayne County with its own county seat at Detroit; however this change did not take effect until January 1, 1908. On October 16, 1913 referendum voters approved creating a independent school district within Wayne Community Schools District No. 2; this action created one of America's largest school districts by area - covering over . As such it would be responsible for all education within its boundaries save charter schools and religious schools which fall under either separate districts or independently run systems outside of Wayne CSD2 jurisdiction. In 1940s there were several small businesses opened up around town due to World War II GI housing shortages which had not been seen before then but still exist today even though many are now long gone like Snack Shoppe and Hardware store etc... Many people that worked at these businesses will never forget their time here because they helped shape what makes Novi so special today including our Mayor Pete Buttigieg Jr., State Rep., City Councilmember & countless others

Novi, Michigan was founded in 1835 by John C. Neely and his wife Catharine. The town was named after theBattle of Novi in 1763, when General Marquette and his troops fought against the Pembina Indians. The Cnegans who lived in the area for many years donated land to the town, which became a thriving center of commerce. Neely's store is one of the oldest in the town. The first white settler in Novi was George Hines, who arrived in 1837. By 1840, there were twenty-eight families living in Novi. In 1846, President James K. Polk issued an Executive Order that recognized Indian title to all of northwest Michigan and east central Ontario. The order also designated Novi as part of the “New England Territory” with its own government and courts system. Numerous businesses were established during this time including a sawmill, gristmill, flour mill and cheese factory; all still operate today. In 1853, Reverend J[ames] S[aunders], pastor at First Congregational Church located on Main Street corner Eagan Avenue began construction on what would become known as Christmastown Chapel; it would be Octagon shaped with a small vestibule attached to each side facing east (the direction from which Christmas tree lights are usually lit). On December 15th 1850 Union Pacific Railroad workers started construction on what is now Three Rivers Bridge over Little Big Horn Creek just south of Neely's store; it opened to traffic on December 21st 1855! A post office was established at Novi in 1858 under the name Whitefish Landing (later renamed Grosse Pointe) but it closed within two years because no mail reachedNovi! The population of Decatur County grew rapidly during this period with about 1,500 residents by 1860; however, due to religious intolerance towards Catholics throughout much of America at this time, many refugees from Ireland flooded into Northern Michigan during this period seeking asylum or opportunity ( reminiscent of current waves of refugees coming across our southern border ). Many Irish immigrants settled near Grosse Pointe Park where they built their own mills and churches while other groups settled around Lakeshore Boulevard and Monroe Street between Grosse Pointe Park and downtown Novi proper - these neighborhoods still exist today as some remnant homespun architecture can be seen among various low-income dwellings near US-41/Highway M-1A exit #105 off I-94 outside Lansing
Novi was named after Novi Manor, a home built in 1824 by the Rev. John C. Novick. The land on which Novi now stands was granted to the town by Michigan Territory in 1840; it was within the city of Detroit at that time. After becoming a village in 1854, Novi moved from its original location near what is now Woodward Avenue to what is now east of Gratiot Avenue. In 1907, the village had an population of 1,500 people and erected a schoolhouse on Park Street. In 1916, Octave Chanute donated land for a municipal park that became known as Chanute Park; it still exists today. On November 3, 1928, the first election for mayor took place in Novi with Emanuel Jaffe as the winner over incumbent George Prentice Jr.; he would later become Mayor of Detroit. On December 7, 1932 – two years after his inauguration – Jaffe was elected to serve out his full term; he would be re-elected twice more before retiring at age 74 in 1941. In 1946–1947 (the final year of Jaffe’s mayoral term), local automobile dealers formed the Automobile Dealers Association (ADA) to try and improve public transportation options in downtown Detroit; they failed but continue to this day as MetrogasolineDealers Incorporated.). On October 6th 1969 – five days after Ford Motor Company announced plans to close three plants across America due to laissez faire management policies – Novi citizens organized themselves into a “Save Our Plants” rally demanding better working conditions for their employees at Dearborn Heights plant #1 (now Wayne State University); this led to protests throughout Dearborn Heights and other plants until Ford announced it would keep those plants open). The Village then successfully lobbied for passage of legislation creating zoning regulations supporting small businesses instead of large corporations; this ordinance helped spur development throughout downtown Decatur including new hotels and restaurants during Decatur’s heyday as one of America’s most vibrant cities during the late 1800s/early 1900s
