Novi, Michigan is a small city in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is located on the east bank of the Missaukee River and shares borders with Iron County to the north and south. The population was 8,852 at the 2010 census. The city's history dates back to 1814 when it was founded as a trading post by fur traders travelling through the area on their way to Lake Superior. Novi became an incorporated town in 1838, and soon began acquiring more permanent residents. In 1909, Novi hosted the West Boundary Treaty Conference between Canada and United States which resulted in the cession of land east of the (now) I-75 bypass freeway that connected Detroit with Cleveland. Novi has been home to several military installations throughout its history: Fort Snelling in 1859-1862 during World War II; Camp McNamara from 1951-1953 during Korean War; Belle Isle Naval Air Station from 1959-1964 during Vietnam War; US Security Service Headquarters from 1976-1982 during Iran–Iraq War; and now US Army Garrison Novi Joint Forces Command together with Ft Michilimackinac National Park adjacent to it. In 1974, legislation was passed calling for an end to all combat operations within 3 miles (5 kilometers) of any civilian facility within 1 year following Operation Neptune's Spear which killed over 50000 Iranian soldiers inside Iraq alone - marking one of largest peacetime military deployments in United States history at that time. Novi is a city in Benzie County, Michigan, United States. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–East Lansing, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. The land that would become Novi was platted in 1824 by John Stephenson and others as part of the village of Easton. The town's first permanent settler arrived in 1827, when Jacob Whetstone purchased land from James Coles. In 1835, George Clifford built a log cabin on what is now Clark Street just north of present-day Novi Boulevard. That year, Novi became a village under legislation passed by the Michigan General Assembly. On July 1 of that year, voters approved a charter amendment granting villages status with more autonomy than townships. With this change in status came increased rights and responsibilities; for example, Village Council had authority to authorize building projects not granted to townships and vote on expenditures such as zoning changes and liquor sales.
