Novi is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and is part of the Midland-Otter Tail area. The population was 21,569 at the 2010 census, making it the ninth largest city in Michigan. The Novi metropolitan area had a population of 508,574 as of 2013. It is bordered by Grand Rapids to the south and east, Macomb County to the north, and Wayne County to the west. The first known reference to Novi was in 1824 when French traders Hocquemur and La Vigne noted that "Novi" was an Indian word meaning "newcomer." In 1827, John Fonseca characterized Novi as "a place where passions are not excited." By 1840, there were ten families living in Novi Township including four hundred inhabitants who raised cotton and corn on their property around what is now downtown Novi. In 1847, George Sanger built Sanger's Mills on current Elm Street between Ionia Boulevard and Main Street which became one of the most important mills in Michigan because it processed woolen cloth into goods such as bedding for soldiers during World War II. At its peak production capacity (2 million pounds/year), Sanger's Mills employed more than 350 people. In 1865, John Nolen founded Nolen & Company which became one of America’s leading flour manufacturers with factories located throughout Great Lakes region from Chicago until 1970 when it merged with Imperial Flour Mills Incorporated becoming Imperial Flour Corporation (IFC). After years of decline due to competition from other global companies such as Proctor & Gamble and Nabisco Corp., IFC announced plans to close its remaining plants—the Flint Hills Mill (in nearby Battle Creek) and Janesville mill (now based in Holland Township)—in 1986 but these closures did not happen because investors purchased those facilities back from IFC for $29 million dollars after seeing promise for use within IFC’s core products: civil engineering materials; foods; pharmaceuticals; paper products; automotive parts; health care services; construction materials etcetera

Novi, Michigan is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Clinton County. The population was 21,812 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Clinton County after Muskegon Heights and Flint. The town was organized on March 17, 1837 by a group of farmers who had journeyed from what is now Ontario, Canada to purchase land in what is now Novi Township. The first store opened in 1838 and within two years there were 10 businesses operating in the small town. By 1862, Novi had a post office and three churches. The early 1800s saw an increase in immigration to the area due to religious reasons as many new German immigrants came to America looking for land that would offer them opportunities for religious freedom and education. On October 15, 1829, about 60 settlers from Bavaria arrived at Detroit with six wagons carrying goods including flour, hay, candles, coals and tools for their farmstead near present day Novi Township. They founded what would become known as "the Bavarian Settlement." After arriving they erected cabins or huts which served as their home until 1840 when they began building homes using logs that they brought overland from their homeland. In 1847 they voted to secede from Michigan because of disagreements with the government over taxes In 1850 they built a sawmill which continued production until 1958 when it closed due to lack of competition; however it left an indelible mark on Novi's history both commercially and culturally. One reason why this mill produced such high quality lumber was because it was one of only two mills in Northern Michigan producing woodturning products at that time! Today you can still find remnants of this mill including pieces of machinery still standing today! Another legacy from these days includes the establishment of Novi's first shopping center which opened its doors on February 3rd 1978 located off I-94 just south of downtown Novi! This complex included 14 stores including four Sears stores along with several restaurants/bars/stores all under one roof! It remains today one of most iconic examples of mall development ever attempted inMichigan!
Novi was founded in 1819 by John A. Novi and James H. Deale as a mill town on the east side of the river that now forms the city limits. It began as a small community of about 100 people, primarily engaged in farming and lumbering. In 1836, the Novi Township was organized, and in 1865, it became part of Macomb County. The population reached 2,500 by 1920 and 4,000 by 1930. The Novi Paper Mill closed in 1957; however, the Decatur paper mill continued to operate until 1978. The city of Novi was established on November 3, 1952 when itwas merger of two towns: Northville (on the north side of the river) and South Lyon (southwest of Novi). At its peak population in 1960 there were over 50 businesses in downtown Novi with a population density over 100 people per square mile; however this figure has since decreased to around 30-40 people per square mile today due to various factors including suburban growth and housing developments within walking distance of most businesses. Downtown is still home to several large commercial buildings such as Sears & Roebuck Plaza which was built after World War II to replace an earlier store building destroyed by fire
