Norton Shores is a small town in the Kalamazoo Valley of Michigan, United States. The population was 901 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskegon Heights micropolitan statistical area. The community was founded in 1872 by Abram Norton and his wife Lula. Norton's brother-in-law, John Sennett, had already settled there in 1866 and named it after himself, Norton Township. In 1893, Abram Norton donated land to the local school district for a high school and two churches. The first building was completed in 1907 and served as both a high school and church until 1957 when it became the primary library for town. In 1955, Mrs. George Aiken donated space on her property for what would become Nortonshore Middle School which opened in 1959. The original gymnasium from 1927 remains on campus today aswell as several other buildings including an auditorium, science wing and music wing that were added during later years such as 1978 when Nortonshore High School (now Northern Michigan University) moved into the old middle school building on Main Street; 1984 when Nortonshore Intermediate School reopened after being closed for many years due to lack of students; 1996 when North Muskegon Community College opened its doors adjacent to Nortonshore High School; 2003 when Nortonshore Junior/Senior High School became a part of Muskegon Heights Schools; 2006 when Western Michigans Technical Institute opened its doors adjacent to Nortonshore Junior/Senior High School This paper will focus specifically on one specific event that took place in 1953 which marked the beginning of a long history with scopes being used by residents of Norton Shores: The dedication of Big Ben Scopes Telescope at nearby Mt Pleasant Observatory!

Norton Shores is the tenth largest city in Michigan and the second-largest city in Macomb County. The City of Norton Shores was founded on July 1, 1887 by George P. Norton and named for him and his wife Alice. The first store was built on what is now Main Street by Mr. Norton and Mrs. Norton. A post office was established in 1888 and the name of the town changed to Norton Shores on October 7, 1889 after its incorporation into Macomb County as a separate municipality under the name of "Norton". In 1899, an electric light plant was built which became one of the largest in America when it went online in 1903 In 1905, an expressway called US-101A was constructed that connected downtown with eventual suburbs such as South Lyon and Sterling Heights while also providing access to wider parts of Macomb County not served by other roads at that time In 1912, a new hospital was opened within walking distance of Downtown which became known as St Joseph's Hospital until it closed in 1984 By 1925 there were over 100 businesses operating within Downtown buildings alone including lumberyards, ranches/grazing land stores etc As automobile use increased throughout Greater Detroit through processing plants opening up near downtowns jobs moved away from Downtown but instead nearer Highway 10 or out into surrounding communities such as Dearborn Heights (then called Garden Hills) or Westland Park . With defense industries becoming more important Downtown businesses relocated outside River Township boundaries onto both sides of I-696 across from Royal Oak Mall giving rise to what is now Midtown Detroit .RTD bus service started operations running along Woodward Avenue between Campus Martius Road & Mound Road starting back on December 5th 1915 with stops at present day McNichols Plaza & Harbor Place before continuing down Woodward all the way to Grand Rapids where it terminated

Norton Shores was founded on the site of an earlier settlement in 1837 by John Norton and his family. The first settler in what would become Norton Shores was John Norton, who arrived in 1837 from Rhode Island with his family. By 1840, there were 10 families living in what would become Norton Shores. In 1846, William Weller settled here and named it after himself and his wife Phebe Weller. In 1850, Isaac Perkins moved to Norton Shores from Ionia Township and built a log cabin on the banks of the Ottawa River. In 1862, General Ulysses S. Grant visited here while campaigning for president and decided to make NortonShores his headquarters during his trip through Michigan. He later called it "Grant's Fort". In 1865, George Winton homesteaded land north of present day White Road east of the river between present day Payne Road (east) and Higgins Road (west). The Litchfield Farmstead property now lays just south of Payne Road across from White House Drive inside city limits; this lot was donated by Mrs. Jane Litchfield to City of Grand Rapids Landmarks Board c/o Mr./Mrs.(last name unknown) prior to her death in 1985 as part of their effort to preserve downtown Grand Rapids In 1870s there were many new settlers arrivein Snyder County including Henery Preble Sr., son Haviland Preble Jr., Fenton Preble & others needing more room so they started farming on their own lots also some blacks came too but all closed up shop because no one wanted them around
