Norton Shores, Michigan was a town in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 5,872 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing– snapping to Grand Rapids–Warren Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1881 by George Norton and named after him. The first post office opened in Norton Shores on July 17, 1881. In 1911, the name of the town was changed to Hudson Heights to honor then-Governor John M Holland of Michigan. In 1922, Norton Shores became an independent city and expanded its boundaries to include parts of neighboring Monroe Township including what is now known as west side Warren Park. In 1955, Hudson Heights merged with nearby Clinton Township and it has been a borough since that time. As of the census of 2000, there were 7,919 people living in the borough; 6% were Black or African American, 0% were Native American or Alaska Native; 79% were White alone; 1% (1 household out of every 100) had someone from another race live with them; and 3% (3 households out of every 100) were Lesbian/Gay couples.
Norton Shores is a town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 3,569 at the 2010 census. Norton Shores is part of the Grand Rapids–Muskegon Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Norton Shores was John Hodge in 1837. A post office was established at Norton Shores in 1852, and it remained in operation until 1959. The town was named after Commodore Richard Fenton Norton, who served as Commander-in-Chief of the United States Navy from 1865 to 1870. Some of the earliest businesses in Norton Shores were a grocery store and a millinery shop run by two women known as Aunt Lydia and Aunt Jemima. Other early businesses included a Ford dealership and an ice cream parlor where Connie Eaton became famous for her innovative cones made with whipped cream that she called "Eaton's Cotton candy." In 1916, local ranchers bought land east of present day Norton Shores for what would become the now well-known Payne Farms subdivision. During World War II many American soldiers lived or camped there while fighting overseas; some remain buried there today on Payne Farm Cemetery property located just east of town along State Route 906 (now Highway 233). In 1958, when Muskegon County merged with Wayne County to form Michigan Township, parts of Norton Shore were annexed into that township. The townships formed within Michigan Township: Muskegon Heights (1957), Holland (1958), South Haven (1959), Rochester Hills (1960), White Lake Township (1961) and Park City Township (1963) all had their own respective police departments which continued to operate until 1994 when they were consolidated into one department under the name “Michigan Police Department” within Grand Rapids Municipal Services District #7200. In 1996 then-Mayor Don Carey created an additional village – Webster Village – within Grand Rapids Municipal Services District #7200 based on suggestions from residents about creating a community outside of downtownGrand Rapids for retail development purposes which later morphed into what is now called Northvale Village – home to Century 21 Super Markets since 2002 – but only lasted until 2004 when it too was disbanded due to budget cuts implemented by Mayor Carey’s successor Dan Kalamazoo . After years of decline starting around 2000 when large numbers of people began moving away from rural areas towards larger cities such as Lansing or Detroit due to joblessness during the Great Recession many small businesses closed down throughout Nortonshore including several churches which also went out OF BUSINESS during this time as well as most residences leaving making it an almost ghost town save for one Mobil gas station open until recently left abandoned with no employees inside since 2007
