Norton Shores, Michigan is an unincorporated community in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. It is located on the south side of the Detroit River near Saginaw and Midland. The community was founded in 1892 by John Norton and his family. It was named for John Norton's father-in-law, General James Wilkinson. In 1907, the town had a population of about 100 people. In the 1960s and 1970s, Norton Shores experienced a significant population decline due to rural migration to nearby townships and villages around Saginaw Bay. However, in recent years it has regained some of its former population level as residents move back into the area to retire or start anew.

Norton Shores has been a shooting community for over sixty years. The first shooters in Norton Shores were residents of the town of Norton, Michigan. In 1936, the first match was held at the local post office with twenty-four shooters. In 1951, the first state IPSC Championship was held at the local high school and thirty shooters competed. From 1955 to 1957, there were four state championships each year at different locations in Norton Shores; one located at the high school and three hosted by various organizations such as rifle clubs and Pistol Clubs. In 1959, an IPSC tournament was moved from Norton High School to Woodward Community College which made it easier for people of all ages to compete. Since then there have been several expansions including adding a women’s division (1994) and a sanctioned trap tournament in 2002 that became known as “The Big Red Trap Tournament” due to its size (over fifty teams). There are currently three divisions: Master/Open, Open Women, and women’s age seventy five or older open division which is still growing.

Norton Shores was a small town in Wayne County, Michigan, from the late 1800s until the early 1900s. The settlement was founded by Loyalists who fled to the area during the American Revolution. Norton Shores Post Office was established in 1892. The community derived its name from Captain John Norton, a British army officer who had served in North America during the War of 1812 and later became one of the first settlers in what is now Norton Shores. The earliest buildings that remain standing in Norton Shores are a set of log cabin type structures which were built around 1892. The original post office building which still stands today was designed by architect J.W. Headrick and built at a cost of $5,000. It served as an official post office until it burned down in 1916. A second building which also remains standing was constructed about 1915-16 with additions made in 1936-37 and again in 1951-52. It was designated as a Michigan Historical Landmark on November 4, 1984. In terms of cultural significance, Norton Shores has been associated with various aspects of American culture including music, architecture and politics throughout its history. In addition to serving as an unofficial stop on the Underground Railroad for fugitive slaves during the 1850s and 1860s, it also played host to many prominent Americans such as Ulysses S Grant and Abraham Lincoln while they were on tour through Michigan during their presidency campaigns (Grant visited NortonShores on several occasions). In 1918-1919 it also hosted World War I veterans who were billeted nearby after their unit arrived at Fort Gratiot Army Ammunition Plant near Detroit; this event is considered to be one of the most important events to take place within these boundaries since it helped bring attention to local military installations across northern Wayne County (the aforementioned fortifications later became part of Dearborn Heights Naval Base). As recently as 1978-1979 there existed evidence that humans had lived continuously at or near present day Norton Shores for over 10,000 years; excavation findings revealed evidence indicative of human habitation dating back 350 BC! Additionally, some believe that early Native Americans may have inhabited this area before Europeans began arriving here circa 1500 AD because evidence indicates that trade routes between Asia/Central Asia and northwestern Michigan crossed through this region regularly long before contact between indigenous peoples and Europeans occurred (see: "Michigan Indian History"). As such, Norton Shore's extensive historical legacy cannot be understated – even though residents continue to live primarily within its borders today (primarily Due West Homes & Golf Resort), much research remains ongoing into all aspects related thereto both past and present!
