At that time, this region consisted only of lands east of Mackinac Island and north of the Huron River. The town's nameakeship was derived from General James Hinton Norton who fought in the American Civil War and died leading an infantry charge against Confederate forces during Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862. General Norton's death marked one of the most significant battlefield victories in US history as his unit distinguished itself by its gallantry and heroism under intense fire throughout what would become known as Operation Anvil (September 17-25). In honor of General Norton's memory, local residents continue to place smallaques at various points within their community bearing his likeness - an act which demonstrates their deep admiration for him as a man and soldier. As oil started to flow plentifully from shale formations across Michigan into demand worldwide during World War I (1914-18), many farmers decided to leave farming behind and enter into other vocations including manufacturing or service jobs outside the home country where wages were higher than those found inside America’s largest city limits -Detroit. With industry rapidly expanding into new sites along both sides of Mackinac Island – providing vast tracts for housing development – few people had any idea that an entire township would be located just south of Detroit on land once owned by Revolutionary War hero Captain George Washington Carver (1762-1847). However, some shrewd investors saw potential hereabouts; they bought up parcels with plans to develop them into townships subject to vote by residents thereof on such issues as school board membership and library funding etc., thus allowing citizens more direct control over their fate than ever before! Norton Shores is a town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,854 at the 2010 census. Norton Shores is part of the Grand Rapids–Mt. Pleasant Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what would become Norton Shores were David and Sarah Playfair who arrived in 1824 from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They built a log cabin on the south side of current day Old Highway 421 between 1828 and 1830. The Playfair family left Norton Shores when their sonDavid became pastor of First Presbyterian Church (later known as St. John's Episcopal) in Grand Rapids in 1849 and they moved to Marshalltown, Iowa where they raised their children before returning to Norton Shores in 1853 to take up land that David had acquired west of present day Berrien Heights. There they began building a sawmill which commenced operations on December 25, 1853 and continued until 1865 when it was destroyed by fire caused by an arsonist employed by local farmers Hunt & Collins who wanted to use the mill for themselves instead of marketing their products through merchants like David Playfair & his sons John & James In 1865-1867 it was again used for storage before being placed back into service as a flour mill after new equipment was purchased from Flour Mills Company of New York City In 1925-1926 it closed because of lack of demand from the local market but reopened as an Inn following a donation from Mrs Gertrude Austin In 1951-1952 it was razed due to storm damage but restoration started immediately with help from Friends Committee on Human Needs which operates today as The Inn at NortonShores . It is now one of only two remaining wood frame buildings in Muskegon County that still stands complete dating back over 200 years It has been listed on the National Register Of Historic Places since 1984
