Norton Shores is a city in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. Norton Shores is part of the Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Norton Shores was Albert Whitney who arrived in 1836. A post office was established at Norton Shores on October 10, 1840, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on November 6, 1846. The town name may be derived from Mount Pleasant Township which borders Norton Shores to the east and south. On January 1, 1907, Vernon Township merged into Muskegon County and Norton Shores became a part of that entity. The city was incorporated on December 12 of that year. In 1959 the City Council passed resolution to rename the city after General William Tecumseh Sherman because he had been so instrumental in leading America's war for independence during the American Civil War and for his role as military governor of Michigan Territory during Reconstruction. In 1969 Plymouth Township merged into Muskegon County and Norton Shores became an unincorporated community within that township again with no connection to any other municipality or county. On March 7 of that year though this situation changed when Plymouth Township voted to secede from Muskegon County and become its own independent community within that county with its own government - a move which received approval from both the state legislature as well as then-Governor Richard Molnar - NortonShores annexed Plympton Woods (a small wooded community northwest of town) effective immediately providing it with all necessary services including water supply, sewage disposal and fire protection although Plympton Woods continues to maintain its own governance structure separate from both townspeople and municipal authorities within Muskegon County.. This annexation however did not result in any real growth inside or outside of town as much commuter traffic continued traveling through neighboring towns such as Grosse Pointe Farms or Holland Lake while residents continued commuting directly to their jobs located in nearby cities; this pattern continuing until around 1990 when starting off slowly but surely defaults started happening due mainly to aging infrastructure combined with increasing competition from larger municipalities acrossMuskegon County resulting in a gradual exodus by many longtime residents moving permanently into larger metropolitan areas such as Detroit or Lansing

Norton Shores is a town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,154 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Troy–Muskegon Metropolitan Statistical Area. Norton Shores was founded in 1867 by Captain John Norton and his family. The first store in Norton Shores was built on the corner of Main and Hastings Streets. In 1872, Captain Norton married local girl Catharine Cooks and moved his family to Norton Shores from their farm in Wabash Township. Captain John's son George bought the store and name it "Norton Bros." The first post office was established at Norton Shores on November 10, 1872, and operated for seven years until it was destroyed by fire on December 12, 1878. In 1888, Captains John and George Norton donated land to become what is now downtown NortonShores. That year saw also the founding of Michigan State Normal School (later University of Detroit Mercy), which would later become one of America's leading universities. A new school building was erected on this property in 1911-12 for use as a high school education program for Muskegon County students only; it remains standing today as part of Muskegon Community College District #1's main campus buildings complex known as Old Main Campus. Captain John's grandson Augustus Richardson died suddenly while vacationing with friends near Naples Florida on October 8th 1889; age 31 years old Captains John (Johnnie) Richardson succeeded him as captain general/owner/manager of the company store at Nortonshore Stores Incorporated & Company with full authority over all aspects thereof including but not limited to contract farming services furnished thereto underwritten agreement between himself & assigns thru agents James Hockaday & others dated October 9th 1889 when he arrived back home from said trip—Apostle Elijah Boice took charge management ditto upon expiration date Sept 3rd 1890 remaining manager until death Oct 15th 1890 proved effective Nov 6th 1889 What followed next were many changes due toCaptains Richtersonship itself with many sons working there day & night 7 days a week (& some weekends too) keeping everything going despite major financial challenges caused by world war 1 then conflict within company caused by several factors such as tight money squeeze during that time period shortages Of saltpetre brought about because Battle Of Gettysburg had just ended— Continued struggles thru depression era then into World War 2 etc.— For most people who knew anything about business during those times its an amazing story these guys kept things running even when everything else around them went wrong.— Store closed down Dec 9th 1948 after 103 years
Norton Shores was founded by John Norton in 1855. The town grew up around the Norton lighthouse, which is now a museum. In 1876, the Norton lighthouse was destroyed by a fire. The town rebuilt and in 1888, it became the capital of Michigan.
