Norton Shores is located on the edge of the Upper Peninsula and is bordered by Muskegon Heights to the north, Winterset to the east, and Holland Township to the south. The community began as a post office called Norton on May 3, 1867, with Averill Sutherlin as mail carrier and storekeeper. In 1876, James Fenton established a sawmill and gristmill in NortonShores which became one of Michigan's largest lumber producers until it closed in 1978. During World War II, Norton Shores was home to two military airfields; Point Mugu Army Airfield (now known as Downdale Airport) and White Sands Army Airfield (now known as North Muskegon Municipal Airport). In 1949, Nortonshore's first high school was opened for students grades 7-12; concurrent with nearby Muskegon Heights High School which had been open since 1907. In 1974, Northern Michigan University moved from Marquette University Campus in East Lansing into what is now Nortonshore High School's quadrant 2Z on land that had once been used by Northwest Electric Company's power plant headquarters during Prohibition days when northerners could purchase electricity from northeast utilities without paying their northwestern counterparts' inflated rates then available only through Detroit or Flint area utility monopolies.). After years of planning and fundraising by local residents and NMU Extension Service staff members working with city officials including Mayor Moe Browning, plans were finally approved for construction of a new music academy building adjacent to northerside High School that would house both high schools - opening in fall 1999 - creating an entire block bounded by NmU Blvd., Northeast Ave., E Woodward Ave., I-275/A Mileage Rd./Downdale Rd., First St./Holland Dr.-Norton Woods Dr.-Stroudsburg Rd.-Fenton Way-NMU Quadrant 2Z .

Norton Shores is a town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. Norton Shores is part of the Grand Rapids–Wolverine metropolitan area. It is located on the shore of Lake Huron and overlooks the mouth of the Kawkawink River. The first Europeans to visit Norton Shores were traders from France in 1807 and 1808. The town was named for David Norton, a merchant who owned land in what is now Muskegon County. The first settler was George Stephenson, who built a gristmill at Norton Shores in 1824. In 1830, Hiram Bingham purchased land east of present-day Norton Shores and founded what would become Battle Creek Township. He donated some of his property to build an early school that serves today as Battle Creek Elementary School. In 1865, American General Ulysses S Grant made an inspection tour of Michigan and found that there were no towns worthy of being called "towns." He recommended that all such towns be merged into one larger center called Detroit so that everyone could benefit from its commerce and education opportunities. Detroit's incorporation as a city later followed suit. At this time, much of what is now Muskegon County belonged to Wayne County; however, portions including Battle Creek Township remained within Muskegon County until it was annexed by Detroit in 1903. During World War II, many workers from Flint worked on shipyards located along the Rouge River near Hastings (now Isabella). When duty ended for those workers, their families moved back into Flint and took up residence in nearby NortonShores once again during wartime shortages caused by the war effort. Many people who lived here after war began also returned home when they learned about the availability of jobs outside Flint while still living close enough to take advantage of job resources available hereabouts thanks to ample commercial activity due to postwar reconstruction efforts facilitated by then-Governor William Milliken's Executive Order No. 9018 issued on October 5th., 1946\. In 1960s residents voted not to annex Battle Creek Township back into Muskegon County but instead retain it as their own municipality separate from both cities under Mayor John O'Leary\'s leadership although annexation did occur subsequent decade prior with only limited controversy\. mergers have since occurred with other municipalities within both cities\". Norton Shores was founded in 1836 by John Norton and his wife, Harriet. The town was named for John Norton's father, Nathaniel Shores. In 1847, the town had a population of fifty-two people. In 1870, Norton Shores became a city. The city was incorporated on February 24, 1893. The population of the city at its incorporation was 1,752 people. On May 4, 1903, the city merged with neighboring Port Huron to form the present-day City of Port Huron.
