Norton Shores is a small town in Michigan, United States. It is the namesake of Norton Shores Naval Air Station and has been home to the United States Navy's Aircraft Maintenance and Repair Squadron 3 since 1959. The town is also known for its annual ice cream festival, which takes place in late January or early February. The first people to live in Norton Shores were fishermen who lived near the now-demolished lighthouse. In 1892, Captain Fenton Hammond developed a small farm on a peninsula that overlooked the mouth of the Shiawassee River. He named his land "Norton" after Commodore John A. Norton, Jr.'s flagship during World War I. By 1907, most of what is now Norton Shores had been settled by either farmers or fishermen from nearby Muskegon Heights and other townships. In 1909, local officials purchased land at the mouth of Shiawassee River from Russian immigrants for $5 per acre (2¢ per square foot). This site would become one of three airfields used by Navy aircraft during World War II: NAS Detroit (later NAS Pensacola), NAS Cleveland (now NAS Jacksonville) and NAS Midway Island (later NAS Whiting Field). The others were Camp Blanding Barracks on an island in Lake Erie and MCAS Tampa Bay on Tampa Bayou Key West. In 1944, when Emperor Hirohito became Japan's new emperor following their war with America, USS "Okinawa" sailed into Battle Harbor as part of Operation Crossroads to bombard Japanese airfields allied with America during World War II. On October 24th 1945 USS "Okinawa" was sunk offshore by American forces duringOperation Neptune's Spear; all aboard died including commanding officer Rear Admiral Jens Weidmann (HMAS Perth) who had been leading squadron operations from shore casino on Guam with Commander Ralph Wittenborn flying his Corsair III fighter escort over Okinawa until he was killed along with Lieutenant Commander Clifford Eaker CBE USNR while strafing targets ashore
