Norton Shores is a town in Benzie County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Midland–Oswald Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in Norton Shores were the Potawatomi Indians who built their village on an island in the river that now forms Norton Lake. In 1837, James Kapp and his brother-in-law, Chauncey Griggs, bought land from the Potawatomi and began farming it. The town of Norton was platted in 1839 by John A. Norton and named for him. It became a village in 1856 when it had a population of 400 residents. The first post office was established in 1865. By 1870, Norton had a store and two churches (the first being built c1860). After Wabash Railroad reached Norton on October 16, 1870, business slowed down as people went to Waubane instead; however, by 1872 there were six businesses with over 100 employees including three stores and one hotel In 1886 local fishermen discovered large lead mines near what is now downtown NortonShores and decided to set up small shops to selllead products from their boats into townspeople's homes for storage or trade purposes until they could find buyers or turn these lead mines into more profitable enterprises A mill replaced the early fisherman's shop but did not become very successful so John A. Norton Jr., president of The Dodge Manufacturing Company purchased the mill from its owner Swen Hultgren for $1 million in 1907 This company produced automobiles until 1969 then converted it into an all-purpose industrial park which still employs about 900 people today In 1912 Jens Jensen founded Sutton Motors Corporation which manufactured opencars under license from Detroit Cars companies before becoming Ford Motor Company’s largest supplier worldwide

Norton Shores was founded in 1847 by George Norton and his brother, Jacob. The town was named after the shores of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. In 1850, Norton Shores had a population of only 30 people. But by 1860, the town had grown to over 100 people and was home to two schools, a post office, a Methodist church, and five stores. In 1870, Norton Shores became a part of the newly formed Detroit Township. By 1880, the town had reached its peak with over 1,000 residents. However, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Norton Shores served as an important military base for General Ulysses S. Grant's army. In 1865, after General Grant's army lost control ofDetroit Township and moved into neighboring Oakland County, Norton Shores became part of that new county as well. The community remained booming until World War II (1939-1945). After the war ended, Norton Shores declined rapidly due to changing demographics and economic decline. In 1960 it merged with nearby Gratiot City to form Gratiot City/NortonShore Borough. However, this merger failed to make much difference in population or economy because both municipalities were under federal jurisdiction at that time. That changed when NortonShore borough was dissolved in 2000 as part of the consolidation process within Gratiot City/NortonShore Borough; however it still remains a part of Oakland County government as an unincorporated area outside of municipal boundaries Today there are few remnants remaining from NortonShore's past including one small house on US Highway 10 which is now occupied by a bed & breakfast establishment called The Lodge at Norton Shore A number of businesses remain open in downtown Gratiot City/Norton Shore such as: Northern Ford dealership which closed down in 2006 but reopened in 2011 as Artifacts N' Antiquities; First National Bank which also closed down but reopened in 2011; Eastside Tire store which closed down in 2006 but reopened in 2011; JBH Auto Sales located on Second Street near US 9th Avenue opened up shop again since they vacated their previous location across from Eastern Michigan University after years being vacant The Richardson farmstead is still standing along rural Route 24 north-east of town limits
