Norton Shores was a small town in Michigan, located on the Shiawassee River. The town was founded by Captain Norton and his wife, Mrs. Norton, in 1813. The original settler family of Norton Shores consisted of Mr. and Mrs. Prentice. By 1830, the population of Norton Shores had grown to eighty-six residents. In 1850, Captain Norton sold the town to Colonel John Sibley for $1,000 cash. Colonel Sibley renamed Norton Shores "Shiawassee". After the Civil War ended in 1865, shiploads of goods continued to flow into and out of Shiawassee Harbor until 1871 when all navigation was discontinued due to inadequate funding from state government coffers. In that year, Shiawassee Harbor became an agricultural center with several large farms becoming dominant after their purchase of land adjacent to the harbor from Captain Norton's heirs. Because there were no other ports open to shipping during this time period, goods arriving at or leaving Shiawasse Harbor had to be transported by boat which created a significant financial burden on these businesses and led some investors to abandon ship and move away from Shiawassee Harbour entirely during this time period
Norton Shores was founded in 1858 by Captain John Norton and his wife, Abigail. The town was named for Captain Norton's home, which he built in 1837 on a small peninsula in the Detroit River. In 1865, the town became a part of Decatur County. In 1898, the town was renamed Norton Shores after its first postmaster, Wm. Norton.
