Norton Shores is a small town in Wayne County, Michigan. It is located about 20 miles east of Detroit on the shore of Lake Huron. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. Norton Shores was founded in 1872 by Dr. George Norton and Mr. John Goodwin as a small fishing village on the southeast side of what is now Norton Shores Township. In 1888, Dr. George Norton donated land to create an incorporated village, which became known as Norton Shores after him. The first post office was established in 1893 and the first settler was Wm Hildebrandt of Germany who arrived in 1894. The original store opened in 1896 and it served as the nucleus for what would become the downtown business district that still exists today. In 1903, Dr. George Norton donated another piece of land to create a new township which became known as Norton Shores Heights after him and his wife Bettye Fenton-Norton (1868-1948). Mrs. Fenton-Norton also donated money to help build two churches in 1907 and 1911 respectively, one being dedicated to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church and the other being dedicated to St Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Parish according to local legend (the current church building dates back to 1922). When World War I began in 1914, many local farmers were drafted into military service and some families took up arms against Germany or Austria along with their loved ones during this time period called “The Great Lakes War” according to history buffs living within our borders today! At its peak there were over 2,000 residents employed by businesses within downtown Norton Shores according to historian Donny Payne who has written extensively about this era since he retired from his job as an editor for The Daily Review newspaper here in Northeastern Michigan more than 25 years ago! After World War I ended hostilities ceased between America & Great Britain but due to American entry into World War II firearms ownership increased once again! Many people who retired from manufacturing during those dark days returned home & resumed their old professions thanks largely thereto Minister Joe McCarthy’s hearings that followed on October 15th 1946 when President Harry Truman announced Executive Order 9066 which outlawed all types of firearm possession by Americans without a license or registration! This order effectively did away with gun control laws throughout much of America including Northeastern Michigan! As gun control laws tightened up following World War II numerous manufacturers closed their doors unable/unable to compete against imported competitors especially when prices escalated manifold!! These closures left many northerners out of work however they did manage to preserve some aspects of their culture such asGun Culture!!! In 1951–1952 Doctor George Prentice came here from Flint MI with his family seeking medical care for his father who had been stricken with leukemia while working at Ford Motor Company plants near Dearborn MI He had originally come here because he could not find enough physicians willing To treat cancer patients outside Detroit!!! After several months Of treatment at Atherton Hospital we sent him backTo live With His Family In Flint where he died On January 14th 1952.......... Doctor Prentice's death marked the endOf Gun controlsin Michigan !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In recent years, there has been renewed interest in restoring or developing old mill buildings and businesses in NortonShore; examples include restoration work at Old Mill #1 (a former flour mill) which began in 2009; development of a new park adjacent to Old Mill #2; and reconstruction of a large water tower that served as home base for military radar tests during World War II. These projects have helped bring attention back to NortonShore as an attractivelocality with potential for revitalization
