Norton Shores is a small town in the Kalamazoo Valley of Michigan, United States. The population was 1,692 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskegon Heights–Harrison Township Community School District. Norton Shores was founded in 1868 by George and Sarah Norton, two farmers from nearby East Lansing who were looking for a place to raise their families. The original name of the community was Indian Rocks, but it was changed to Norton Shores because of its location on Norton Creek. George and Sarah Norton also donated land for a military Cemetery in 1877 which still stands today near where Trinity Methodist Church now stands. In 1903, they donated 5 acres (20,000 m²) of their property north of town for use as a public school district playground. The first school opened in 1911 and was named Academy Park School after their daughter Alma mater, Yale University. In 1956, Academy Park School became Nortonship High School when it merged with neighbouring Houghton Township High School. When that school district disbanded in 2011, nortonship high became Houghton Middle/High School again and then Northern Michigan Intermediate/Secondary School which serves students from North Muskegon Heights through Harrison Township as well Norton Shores has been home to many businesses over the years including: Eaton's Department Store (1911-1997), Bob O'Malleys Hardware (1887-1973), Wetzel's Brewery (1893-1994), J&R Weldon Coal Mining Company (1907-2006), American Can Co./Plymouth Coal Mines (1915-2011) and more recently IKEA (#1 store in USA). In 2007 IKEA announced that it would be moving its corporate headquarters from Chicago to Grand Rapids; however this move failed to materialize and they remain headquartered there today. The current shopping center located off US 12 south just east of town features an IMAX theater complete with 3D projection capabilities as well as several other large retailers including Macy's(1986-)and Sears(1975-) along with complementary restaurants including PNC Banknorth Shopping Center across the street across from IKEA In recent years there have been efforts by local residents to attract attention away from retail stores towards cultural attractions such as art galleries, music venues etc.; however this has not always gone smoothly due to lack of financial support or opposition from local businesses who see themselves as beneficial components of local economy . A $5 million dollar donation by alumni Steve Jobs Foundation toward economic development within Nortonship will help change this trend .

After Japan's defeat at World War II, Commodore John C. Smith returned home to America and Norton Shores quickly emerged as one of America's most thriving post-war communities thanks to its strong economy, vibrant culture, international ties, and expanding automotive industry (most notably Ford Motor Company). The city has seen growth both temporally (eugenically increasing its population from 3 residents in 1890 to over 50 by 1960) and geographically (the addition of numerous neighborhoods including Fitzgerald Heights/Shorewood Hills/Fulton Park). As part of this growth, many important cultural landmarks have been constructed within or near Norton Shores - including the Nicholas Norton House Historic District®, Battle Creek National Historical Park®, Ford Rouge Plant®, Shoreham Museum®, etc.. Additionally, there has been an increase in international visitors - both permanent residents (such as students at Saginaw Valley State University)and tourists who come to explore American history while enjoying various amenities available in Norton Shores such as golf courses (), nightlife (), restaurants (), etc...
